Our Kids Deserve Better: How One Workshop Changed My View on Saving Our World

Have you ever stopped to look at your children and wonder what kind of future they’ll inherit? Will they breathe cleaner air than we do? Will they have enough food to eat, safe communities to grow in, and forests to explore? As a mother, these questions keep me up at night. I’ve spent years joining clean-up drives, speaking up for our environment, and sharing posts about protecting our natural resources—but I often felt like I was shouting into the wind. And I’ve come to realize something crucial: I can’t do it alone.

Act, it’s not too late for everything. This is our battle. Don’t just blame the government—we are all liable.” I’ve said these words before, but it wasn’t until I joined a recent sustainability virtual workshop that I truly understood what they mean.

Recently, I was lucky enough to be selected as a participant in an online workshop on sustainability, organized by Roar Agile Communicators, Comm & Sense, and BDO. The sessions opened my eyes to how many others are fighting this same fight—and how we can work together to create real change.

Understanding the Blueprint for Change: The SDGs

Ms. Andreana Gabrielle S. David, Programme Officer of UP-CIFAL, led a discussion on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—a set of 17 interconnected principles designed to build a better and more sustainable future for all. The SDGs cover everything from eradicating poverty and hunger to ensuring clean water, affordable clean energy, climate action, and protecting life on land and below water. For the Philippines, these goals are particularly critical: as a nation vulnerable to climate change, with communities facing challenges in access to basic services, the SDGs provide a roadmap to address both social inequities and environmental threats, ensuring no one is left behind.

Business as a Force for Good: How BDO is Leading the Way

As the country’s largest bank, BDO has positioned itself at the forefront of sustainable development. Marla Garin-Alvarez, First Vice President and BDO Sustainability Officer, explained why sustainability is the way forward for the institution. At its core, sustainability is guided by the principle: “Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs.”

BDO integrates Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices across its operations, earning recognition from reputable bodies like the ASEAN Corporate Governance Scorecard and the Sustainability Reporting Awards. True to its tagline “We Find Ways,” the bank has launched initiatives like the Blue Bond—the Philippines’ first of its kind, which funds projects focused on marine conservation and sustainable fisheries. Its Sustainable Finance Framework ensures that all loan applications are assessed for environmental impact, while programs like housing loans for solar panel installations and tree-adoption partnerships with Haribon Foundation empower both employees and customers to take action. The bank also trains its workforce on the SDGs to embed sustainability in every aspect of its work.

Amplifying the Message: Communicating Sustainability Right

Malou Talosig-Bartolome, Columnist and Diplomatic Correspondent of Business Mirror, tackled how to share sustainability stories effectively on social media. She emphasized that content must be accurate, relatable, and impactful. “Living in a way that meets our needs today without compromising the needs of future generations—while protecting the environment,” she noted, highlighting that every post has the power to influence. For content creators and advocates alike, non-negotiables include using credible sources, reliable data, and being transparent about both progress and challenges.

We All Have a Role to Play—Even in Small Ways

The workshop drove home a powerful truth: no matter your age or background, you have the power to make a difference. Leadership cannot do it alone, companies cannot do it alone. The real power lies with the people to protect our people and planet.

You don’t need to launch large initiatives to contribute—simple daily actions can create meaningful impact:

- At home: Use reusable containers for leftovers instead of plastic bags or wraps; switch off lights and unplug devices when not in use; compost fruit and vegetable peels in a small bin or through a community compost program.

- When shopping: Bring your own eco-bags and water bottle; choose locally grown produce at wet markets to cut down on transport emissions; avoid single-use items like straws and disposable cutlery.

- In your community: Join or organize small clean-up drives in your barangay or local park; share accurate sustainability information with family and friends; support local businesses that prioritize eco-friendly practices.

- At work or school: Print only when necessary and use both sides of the paper; start a “swap corner” for books, clothes, or school supplies; advocate for waste segregation in your institution.

As UN Secretary-General António Guterres puts it: “Humanity depends on the boundless energy, ideas, and contributions of youth everywhere. Today and every day let's support and stand with young people in shaping a just and sustainable world for people and planet.”

Our children don’t just need us to worry about their future—they need us to act for it. Whether you’re a parent, a student, a professional, or someone who simply cares, there’s a place for you in this fight. Let’s make sure the world we leave behind is one our kids will be proud to call home.

I Was There When Hope Turned Into Action

Last May 26, I attended something truly inspiring—the Generation HOPE launch at Samsung Hall, SM Aura. And honestly, it gave me a whole new perspective on how simple everyday choices can help solve something as big as our country’s classroom shortage.

It wasn’t just an event—it was a movement. HOPE, the organization behind those bottled waters that help build schools, teamed up with the Department of Education and some of the Philippines’ most loved brands—BDO, Carmen’s Best, Grab, Penshoppe, Aivee Clinic, SM Supermalls, and Sunnies—to launch Generation HOPE.

The mission? To make it easier for people like you and me to help build real classrooms for Filipino kids—just by doing the things we already do every day. Shopping, eating ice cream, ordering online, using rewards points—yes, even those can help now.

What struck me the most was something HOPE Founder Nanette Medved-Po said on stage:

"In a world that’s so divided, let’s come together for something we all believe in: giving kids a better future through education."

And I saw that unity firsthand—government leaders, brand partners, educators, and everyday Filipinos, all standing together for one goal.

Here’s how you can be part of it too:

Use BDO’s new “HOPE in Every Spend” credit card—part of your spending goes directly to building classrooms.

Try Carmen’s Best Hope in a Scoop and Hope in a Pint (delicious and impactful!).

Donate GrabRewards points through the app.

Grab a limited-edition Aivee x HOPE bag or skin card.

Shop Penshoppe’s HOPE-themed clothes and accessories.

Buy SM-branded water bottles—part of sales will help fund schools.

Pick up Sunnies’ new HOPE lens kit or flask.

Each of these brands found their own creative way to let YOU give hope with every purchase. And every single peso adds up to something powerful: real classrooms, for real kids, in real communities that need them.

So yes—I was there. I saw it start.

But this is our movement now. You don’t need to be at an event to take part. All you have to do is choose HOPE in your everyday life.

Spotting Investment Scams: BDO Foundation and the SEC Guide Filipinos

Check with SEC. The video not only identifies red flags of investment scams but also encourages viewers to check with the SEC before sealing an investment deal.

Investment scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, making it harder to distinguish genuine opportunities from fraudulent ones.  The adage "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is" remains crucial, but discerning legitimate investments requires vigilance. This is where the BDO Foundation and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) step in to help Filipinos navigate the complex world of investing safely.

This is a challenge the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and BDO Foundation are trying to address through a partnership project.

The two organizations recently released two entertaining and educational investor protection videos titled “Check with SEC” and “Legit Investments? It’s a Date.” The short videos reveal potential investment red flags, teach viewers what questions to ask and how to verify existing business information, and encourage the public to check with the proper authorities like the SEC when choosing the right investment.

“Doble o higit pa buwan-buwan na kita... Malamang scam ‘yan!

Check with SEC. The video not only identifies red flags of investment scams but also encourages viewers to check with the SEC before sealing an investment deal.

There are many ways to spot investment red flags. One is to ask the right questions and listen to and study the answers. The music video “Check with SEC” listed examples: promising an easy “double your investment” (or more) monthly income, requiring one to recruit other investors for bonuses, and the need to deposit investment in the agent’s personal bank account to facilitate the process, among many others.

These are only some of the common methods that scammers use to lure potential investors to shell out their hard-earned money. Oftentimes, the offers promise high-yielding returns that entice unsuspecting individuals to invest.

Registered to sell securities?

Legit Investments? It's a Date. The video urges investors, “Bago mag-invest, mag-imbestiga."

The video “Legit Investments? It’s a Date” tells the story of Aldea as she investigates three potential investment opportunities. She finds her match by fully understanding her role as an investor, learning more about the business, and asking for the right documents.

One of the many lessons viewers can learn from the video is that being SEC-registered does not automatically mean that a business is licensed to offer investment products. Some of the required documents to look for are permit to sell or offer securities, order of registration, and prospectus and salesman certificate.

The videos are now accessible on the Facebook page of the SEC and soon on other platforms of SEC and its partners, as well as on the BDO Foundation YouTube playlist. These will also be used in training seminars and on-ground campaigns.

Shared commitment to empower Filipinos through education. BDO Foundation highlights the importance of collaborating with organizations like the SEC who share the same advocacy in helping Filipinos make smarter decisions in managing their finances. (Photos courtesy of the SEC)

“BDO Foundation, being a staunch advocate of financial education, also believes in the importance of investor protection. This shared project not only helps prevent Filipinos from falling victim to investment scams but also builds and restores confidence in legitimate investment opportunities,” shared BDO Foundation president Mario Deriquito.

7-Year-Old Soldier's Daughter's Wise Words: A Lesson in Financial Literacy

Empowering soldiers with financial literacy. Major Maria Theresa Babiera of the Philippine Army shares her story on financial discipline during the town hall event, organized by BDO Foundation and the BSP, to discuss strategies for advancing the financial literacy programs of government agencies

Major Maria Theresa Babiera of the Philippine Army is a beneficiary of the BDO Foundation's impactful financial literacy program.  This program, a corporate social responsibility initiative of BDO Unibank, partners with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) to promote financial inclusion nationwide.

During a recent BDO Foundation and BSP town hall event, "Kita-Kita," Major Babiera shared a heartwarming anecdote. While shopping with her seven-year-old daughter, she asked if the child wanted to buy something.  The daughter's reply was remarkable: "Mom, is that a necessity or something unimportant? You don't need to buy for me if it's a luxury."

This insightful response showcased the effectiveness of Major Babiera's financial education efforts.  Attributing her knowledge to seminars and financial literacy modules, she emphasized the program's impact on her family's life.

Financial Discipline: A Way of Life

From duty to way of life. Navy Capt. Michael Barrion emphasizes that financial literacy is now a daily practice for soldiers.

Since 2019, the BDO Foundation, AFP, and BSP collaboration has provided extensive financial training to military personnel.  A Memorandum of Agreement solidified this commitment to enhance financial management skills, covering planning, saving, budgeting, investing, debt management, and scam avoidance.

This initiative has significantly shifted mindsets within the AFP. BDO Foundation President Mario Deriquito noted a surge in interest in investment products following training sessions.  While investments are gaining traction, debt management and scam prevention remain key focus areas.

The AFP has trained over 50,000 personnel, integrating financial literacy into its career training programs. Navy Captain Michael Barrion highlighted the positive impact on soldier focus and stress levels, stating that almost half of Filipino soldiers are now financially literate, with 76 trained instructors.  By incorporating financial education into each soldier's personal scorecard, the AFP ensures financial literacy becomes ingrained – a way of life, not just a requirement.

Secure Your Family's Future: Why a Plan B is Essential

Plan B is more than just a backup plan—it's a lasting promise that your family’s future stays protected even when life takes an unexpected turn.

Life Insurance: A Necessary Shield Against Life's Uncertainties

In a recent market survey, only half of breadwinners in Metro Manila, Cebu, and Davao City prioritize life insurance.  Even more concerning is the post-pandemic decline in urgency.  While 83% considered protection crucial in 2022, that number plummeted to 54% by 2024.

Why this gap?  Budget constraints are frequently cited.  Many prioritize immediate needs over long-term security. Yet, across demographics, respondents recognize life insurance's value in safeguarding families against unforeseen health issues, death, accidents, or disability.

A Plan B isn't optional; it's a selfless act of prioritizing loved ones' financial well-being.  BDO Life makes life insurance more accessible through its nationwide BDO branch network. While online resources provide information and quotes, many prefer personalized guidance.  This positions BDO Life's financial advisors to counsel clients and build lasting partnerships.

The impact is evident in advisors' stories.  They share how life insurance shielded families from devastating financial blows.

Putting his family first until the end

BDO Life financial advisor Jimmy recalled a heartbreaking incident where a client met an accident on the expressway while on a family outing.  Sadly, the insured passed away upon reaching the hospital.

The insured’s wife later shared that she was not aware her husband availed of life insurance until he requested her to pay the premium—just one month before the accident. “Iyong pagpapabayad ni sir kay ma’am ng premium ay tila lang daw naging dahilan upang ipa-alam na meron siyang inilaang BDO Life insurance para sa kanila,” said Jimmy.

The wife also wrote to say, “Akala mo di mo kailangan, pero kailangan mo pala. Dati para sa akin, dagdag expenses lang.” Her own realization of the value of insurance compelled her to make more people aware of the benefit that life insurance brings.

Leaving a loving legacy

Another advisor, Jonah, described a businessman's sudden death.  The insurance proceeds ensured his family could maintain his businesses and repay debts, providing a crucial safety net.

"Nakita ko na kahit healthy ang isang tao, death can happen anytime,” recalls BDO Life financial advisor Jonah.

Her client, a businessman who ran a water refilling station and construction firm, passed away unexpectedly. With the proceeds from the insurance policy, his family was in a more secure situation to face the future.  “Nabayaran ang balance ng loan for an L300 para maipagpatuloy ang naiwan na business. Naipagpatuloy rin ng family ang water refilling station business.”

His wife, who was working overseas, came home for the funeral and expressed her heartfelt gratitude for her husband’s foresight.

Being Ready with a Plan B if Plan A fails

When talking to prospects and clients, BDO Life financial advisor Randy explains the need for a Plan B. “We all have a Plan A—our preparation for the future through savings and investments. But we must also make clients recognize the need for a back-up plan o Plan B para ma-secure ang pamilya financially for unexpected events, at hindi ma-disrupt ang Plan A.”

One of his clients had planned for his life insurance proceeds to be used for his children’s education. “They still have quite a long way to go till they finish college, but there will be some funds to see them through. Whatever he left behind by way of life insurance will provide not only for his children, but also for his wife and mother.”

BDO Life President and CEO Renato Vergel De Dios underscores the importance of providing for loved ones' future.  He stresses that life insurance is a financially responsible choice, not a luxury.

"You owe your loved ones a Plan B that will allow them to move on in life when you’ve ceased to be in the picture. That takes tremendous financial maturity and responsibility to recognize that life insurance isn’t an optional choice. It’s the financially smart thing to do.”

Start your Plan B conversation with BDO Life today. Visit your nearest BDO branch or explore options and get quotes at www.bdo.com.ph/bdo-life.

Fast at secure remittance, handog ng BDO-Seven Bank partnership

No worries.

Very convenient

"In the remittance business in general, there are some cases wherein the remittance fails to be sent. With BDO, all transactions are successfully sent by the senders and received by the beneficiaries. This is one of the strengths BDO has.”

"We Find Ways": BDO Iriga City Branch Provides Essential Services During Typhoon Kristine

The only one. BDO branch in Iriga City was the only bank in the whole Rinconada District in Camarines Sur to remain online during Tropical Storm Kristine’s surge.

IN the face of great damage brought by Tropical Storm Kristine to the Bicol Region, BDO Unibank remained online within the Rinconada District to serve the community’s cash requirements at a dire time when people needed access to their funds.

The Rinconada District encompasses the municipalities of Baao, Balatan, Bato, Buhi, Bula, Nabua, and Iriga City.

According to Romeo R. De Vera III, Senior Assistant Vice President and Area Head of Region 6-Southern Luzon, the BDO branch in Iriga City remained open to clients in need of cash on October 24, when the rest were not available.

De Vera explained that to ensure uninterrupted service to their clients even during calamities, they strategically deployed personnel and resources where they were needed the most, as some branches had to close due to floods and other challenges. He also stressed that BDO prioritized the welfare of its personnel, especially during these challenging situations. "That's always been our practice during calamities—after securing our respective homes and families, our personnel then headed to the branches to help get these up and running, ready to serve our clients.”

All in a day's work

For De Vera, it's business as usual even in the face of typhoons.

"For us, as long as the roads are passable, we went and help out where we were needed. But we only asked employees who were able to report for work and not adversely affected by the flood,” he pointed out.

He also proudly shared that resilience is one of the many positive traits of Bicolanos like him.

"When it comes to calamities, Bicolanos are resilient. It's just a typhoon. But this (Tropical Storm Kristine) was the strongest we've had in 30 years. We were surprised by the magnitude of the ensuing floods," he admitted. "But here in BDO, it's nothing new. Like we always say here, ‘we find ways.’ That's why our clients are so happy with us, as even clients from other banks were able to withdraw using our ATMs."

He also noted the bank’s “We find ways” philosophy extend not only to the level of service they provide to their clients, but also to the support they offer to fellow employees especially amid trying times.

This, De Vera explained, came to fore when personnel from other branches were unable to go home because of the floods.

"A branch manager opened her home to one of the staff who got stranded and was unable to go home because of the flood. The same was true for personnel in our Camarines Sur-Nabua Branch, who were stranded there. We also would like to thank our Security Division for facilitating the delivery of relief goods," he said.

BDO Capital: A Champion of Sustainable Infrastructure in the Philippines

Left photo: MRT-7 is expected to significantly enhance urban mobility in the country. Right photo shows a BESS facility which is one of the largest integrated battery energy storage systems globally.

BDO Capital & Investment Corporation (BDO Capital) was recognized as the Philippines’ Project Finance House of the Year for the seventh time at The Asset Triple A Sustainable Infrastructure Awards 2024. The accolade highlights BDO Capital’s outstanding track record in arranging financing for significant projects in industries such as energy and transportation, which are critical to the country's economic growth.

In addition to this recognition, BDO Capital received the Renewable Energy Deal of the Year award for its role as Mandated Lead Arranger and Bookrunner for SMGP BESS Power Inc.’s (SMGP BESS) PHP 40 billion Syndicated Term Loan Facility. This financing supported SMGP BESS’ Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), one of the largest integrated battery energy storage systems globally. The transaction not only directly financed a sustainable energy source but also indirectly supported the development of other renewable sources, aligning with the Philippines’ goal of generating 35% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030.

BDO Capital also earned the Transport Deal of the Year award for serving as Mandated Lead Arranger and Bookrunner for SMC Mass Rail Transit 7 Inc.’s (MRT-7) PHP 100 billion Syndicated Loan Term Facility. MRT-7 represents the largest-ever peso-denominated syndicated term loan in the Philippines and is a pivotal project under the Marcos administration’s “Build Better, More” infrastructure program, expected to significantly improve mass transportation in the country.

“We have always approached our transactions holistically. We participate in projects that contribute towards nation building which includes job creation, promotion of the well-being of the people and the environment, apart from providing benefits for lenders and borrowers. These recognitions serve as a testament to the team’s dedication in providing innovative financing solutions that deliver exceptional results,” said Eduardo V. Francisco, President of BDO Capital.

BDO Embarks on Green Transformation with IFC Partnership

Photo shows (From L-R): Atty. Federico Tancongco, BDO Senior Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer; Jerome Guevarra, BDO Chief of Staff and Executive Vice President; Paul Xavier Espinosa, IFC Operations Officer on Climate and Risk Management Advisory Services and Nishantha Jayasooriya, IFC Operations Officer.

BDO Unibank Inc. (BDO) takes a significant step towards a greener future by partnering with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to implement specialized training under the Alliance for Green Commercial Banks' (Alliance) pilot program. This collaboration aims to accelerate the green transition within the banking and finance industry. IFC experts conducted in-depth workshops on Green Finance for MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises), Transition Finance, and Impact Financing among BDO leaders and relationship managers.

The Alliance is a global initiative convened by the IFC in partnership with the Hong Kong Monetary Authority. It aims to develop a community of banks leading in green finance across various markets to accelerate the green banking transformation of financial institutions and urgently address climate change.  IFC, a sister organization of the World Bank and a member of the World Bank Group, is one of the largest financiers of climate-smart projects in developing countries.

In 2023, loans deployed to Energy Efficiency projects accounted for 46.2% of BDO’s Green Finance portfolio.  A significant amount funded a Public-Private Partnership for a 900MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) commissioned to address energy intermittency challenges in the country.

BDO continues to fulfill its commitment to finance other green initiatives including renewable energy (26.7%), clean transportation (14.7%), sustainable water and wastewater management (9.9%), pollution prevention and control (1.4%), green buildings (0.8%), and eco-efficient production technologies (0.3%).

As a pioneer in sustainable finance in the country, BDO is fully committed to reduce its carbon footprint while supporting the country’s transition by providing access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and clean energy and energy efficiency initiatives.

BDO Warns of Phishing Scams Targeting New Online App Transition

Beware of scammers taking advantage of the migration to the new BDO Online app.

BDO Unibank is cautioning the public against fraudsters who are taking advantage of the bank's transition to the new BDO Online app, by sending phishing links through emails or text messages to steal money from their online bank accounts.

Scammers are sending fraudulent email messages with a clickable "start" button that leads to a fake BDO website. This ploy gathers usernames and passwords to steal money from victims' online bank accounts.

The bank emphasized that the new BDO Online app, which is set to replace the old BDO Digital Banking app, can only be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play Store.

Fraudsters likewise often take advantage of other related legitimate scenarios in banks like system maintenance to lure victims into clicking on links “to update” their accounts which will then lead to spoofed websites.

To avoid falling victim to these scams, BDO advises customers to only download the new BDO Online app from the App Store or Google Play Store, and avoid clicking on suspicious links.

It’s time to switch to the new BDO Online app by August 19. This new app lets users manage their bank accounts and credit cards, view monthly statements and account summaries. It also features enhanced security options, such as the ability to lock or unlock cards, set spending limits, and control overseas transactions.

BDO projects a net income of ₱53.9 billion for the first nine months of 2023

Capital continues to strengthen with 13% increase in Book Value

In the third quarter of 2023, BDO Unibank, Inc. (BDO) recorded a net income of ₱53.9  billion, up from P40.0 billion in the third quarter of 2022. This increase was driven by broad-based development across its key operations. Due to this, the Return on Common Equity (ROCE) increased to 15.1% from 12.4% in the same time last year.

Customer Loans climbed 7.5% year over year to P2.7 trillion and Deposits increased 12% to ₱3.4 trillion, bringing Net Interest Income to an increase of P176.4 billion.

With help from a number of fee-based and treasury/FX businesses, non-interest income reached a final value of 57.9 billion.

With sales growth still outpacing expense growth, pre-provision operating profit reached an amount of ₱ 80.6 billion.

Non-Performing Loan (NPL) ratio remained stable at 1.99% despite the higher interest rate environment, while NPL coverage improved to 176%. The Bank continues to set aside provisions in line with its conservative credit and provisioning policies.

Common Equity increased to ₱494.3 billion given continued profitable operations. Book Value Per Share (BVPS) increased 13% to ₱93.83. Capital Adequacy Ratio and Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) Ratio strengthened to 15.6% and 14.5%, respectively, with ample capital buffers vs. regulatory minimum levels.

While macroeconomic challenges persist, the Bank remains cautiously optimistic and is well-positioned to capitalize on opportunities given its strong balance sheet and diversified business franchise.
