A Variety of Fun and Healthy Snacks for the Kids

It is never too early to get your kids eating healthy. Of course, that is easier said than done for a generation of children weaned on fast-food and chicheria. But that’s not to say you should just give up. On the contrary, you should strive all the more to introduce your bundles of joy to healthy treats! One of the secrets to doing that is by getting creative with the snacks you give your kids, so they can enjoy snack time and get nutritional benefits at the same time.

Lucky you then because Gullón is now in local shores, and it is here to help you! One of Europe’s leading biscuit manufacturers, Gullón is renowned for its crackling tasty treats, from its choco-flavored Dibus Sharkies crackers to its savory fish-shaped Mini-Fish biscuits. Gullón’s crackers also have nutritive value as a serving of it will give your kids 6 grams of protein and 2.3 grams of fiber. Protein, of course, is vital to your kids’ growth and development. Fiber, on the other hand, is essential in ensuring a healthy digestive system. Gullón products also contain mono-unsaturated fats, which help increase good cholesterol and decrease bad cholesterol.

Getting Creative

While your kids are sure to enjoy eating Gullón crackers as they are, they are guaranteed to love snack time even more if you mix things up and serve Gullón in different ways. Here are some ideas:

Since breakfast is the most important meal of the day, make sure you are serving your kids something tasty but healthy, like a cereal upgraded with a serving of Dibus Sharkies. Let a handful of Sharkies swim in a bowl of cold fresh milk and you can level things up even more by adding mini slices of fruits such as apples and strawberries. The result is a mouthwatering treat rich in vitamins and minerals that your kids will surely love.

Aside from milk, chocolate is the best match for biscuits, like Gullón’s Mini Fish. Drizzle some syrupy melted chocolate on a plate of Mini Fish and watch your kids devour every piece with utmost delight! Where possible, try dark chocolate as it can give your kids essential trace minerals such as iron, magnesium, potassium, and copper.

Cinnamon’s taste is an eclectic mix of sweet and spicy with a citrusy touch, and it is guaranteed to tickle your kids’ discerning taste buds. Just sprinkle cinnamon powder on a serving of Gullón Mini Mix and see your kids’ taste palate expand—all while getting traces of calcium, vitamin A, and potassium from the cinnamon.

Another creative way of serving crackers, this time Mini Crackers, is by pairing it with a fancy yet healthy spread. Avocado is a superfood, and it goes well with bread and biscuits. So, make your kids a Gullón mini cracker sandwich with avocado as a filling. This combo will help give your kids plenty of vitamins C, E, K; magnesium and potassium; and B vitamins.

Of course, there are plenty of other ways to serve Gullón biscuits, with the only limit being your own imagination. The suggestions above are a good start; the rest is up to you. Gullón crackers & Dibus Sharkies  are distributed in the Philippines by Dygen Food Ventures Inc., a subsidiary of Dyna Drug Corporation and available at www.goodwill.market/.

Ajinomoto launches Fun and Educational Virtual Experience

Be More where students and homemakers can learn about food safety, sustainability, and more!

Going on field trips or educational tours is one of the most exciting ways to learn. Before the pandemic, food factory tours were widely used as an avenue for interactive learning for students aspiring to be part of the industry. To replicate this activity, Ajinomoto Philippines Corporation (APC) brings its factory tour online with the launch of The Ajinomoto Virtual Experience: Be More, this time not only targeting students but homemakers as well. Aside from a detailed tour around Ajinomoto’s factory, the virtual space is also packed with kitchen tips and games that everybody will enjoy.

“Meeting eager participants on factory tours is one of the things we miss during these times. More than sharing what we do, the tour has been an avenue for us to educate about food safety and proper nutrition, as well as to share our advocacy on environmental sustainability,” says Roann Co, APC’s General Manager of Marketing and Public Relations. “Now that we’re bringing it online, we are excited that we can reach not only those from NCR but students and homemakers nationwide empowering them to be more knowledgeable and responsible members of the community.”

A trip down the grocery lane

The Supermarket is the first virtual station of the online tour. This is where visitors can learn more about Ajinomoto’s products and learn about the company’s brief history.

From farm to kitchen

After the informational and nostalgic trip, the next stop is the Factory which shows how APC’s products are made. Since this is an online tour with no physical logistical restrictions, participants can also view the farm where raw materials are harvested. From there, visitors are bound to a detailed tour of the factory where aspiring food innovators can learn about topnotch methods and technologies that keep food safe and of quality.

Finishing the Factory tour leads guests to a choice between the Office or the Cooking Plaza. For students, a 360° tour of the Ajinomoto Office will allow them to learn the 5S organization method—Sort, Shine, Set, Standardize, and Sustain—which is widely implemented within the company. On the other hand, the Cooking Plaza features an interactive kitchen where homemakers can learn about the 5Ms of a great meal—Malinis, Masustansya, Masarap, Matipid, at Madaling Gawin—and apply them by virtually cooking dishes, playing games, and answering quizzes.

Towards a more sustainable future

The Ajinomoto Virtual Experience: Be More ends with a message for the future. The last station, Community, features Ajinomoto’s environment education campaign that aims to aid consumers to slowly incorporate sustainable practices into their daily lives.

At Ajinomoto, our commitment towards a more sustainable future is embedded in our Ajinomoto Group Creating Shared Value (ASV) which represents our unchanging mission of helping resolve society’s issues such as global sustainability, food resources, and healthy living. Through the best practices we shared at The Ajinomoto Virtual Experience: Be More, we hope to inspire Filipinos to lead a healthier and eco-friendlier lifestyle,” says Co.

May krisis man o wala, maiging mag-set tayo ng ating financial goals.

Keys in Facing a Crisis: Learn from Leading Entrepreneurs

Some of the most inspiring stories in the past year are about entrepreneurs who manifested strength, optimism, and compassion. They showed us the importance of finding ways to survive and thrive together as a community:  a true expression of the bayanihan spirit as the nation continues to weather the challenges of the pandemic.

A reliable partner for George

George Go faced one of his worst years as an entrepreneur. As the owner of Canyon Woods Resort, Canyon Cove Hotel, and Canyon de Boracay, Mr. Go led his teams through the challenges and impacts of the Taal Volcano eruption and the COVID-19 pandemic, which temporarily closed down his businesses.

“We started as a small construction supply business but managed to grow over the last four decades because BDO has been giving me not just extended credit but also useful advice on how to maximize the use of my loans,” he said.

For Mr. Go, the survival and welfare of his employees became the top priority. He asked BDO for advice and extended credit to allow him to pay his obligations--especially his employees’ salaries.

“I’m relieved that because of BDO’s support, I was able to update my business financials. In the past, businesses focused on revenue, but now, like us, our main goal is to survive, stay healthy, and support our people,” said Mr. Go.

Staying bountiful

Despite being the second-largest poultry business in the country, Bounty Fresh had to adjust to the economic downturn resulting from the pandemic.

“The overall economic demand collapsed due to the pandemic. In effect, this created an oversupply in many food-related industries, including poultry, where production planning takes a much longer period to adjust,” said Debbie Chung, Vice President for Finance of Bounty Fresh.

After a thorough assessment, Chung said they took the option of taking a loan from their bank that would tide them over through the crisis until consumer demand and sales went back to normal.

“BDO was able to assist us from the start of the ECQ by making all the credit lines given to us available anytime we needed them at a very reasonable interest rate,” said Chung.

Today, thanks to the continuing support from BDO, Bounty Fresh is bouncing back.  BDO finds ways to assist clients to survive and thrive in both good times and bad.

These entrepreneurs’ experiences show that creativity, quick thinking, and having dependable partners are key in facing a crisis. By leveraging a reliable partnership with their bank, they were able to find solutions that met their urgent needs.

‘Bakuna, Now Na!'

Patient groups call for ‘Bakuna, Now Na’

PAPO kicks off Unity Statement to increase vaccination uptake, decrease hesitancy.

The Philippine Alliance of Patient Organizations (PAPO), representing 38 patient groups in the country, launches the “Bakuna, Now Na” campaign in a bid to increase vaccination uptake and decrease hesitancy to help curb the pandemic.  The campaign is also in partnership with the Department of Health and is supported by the Department of Science and Technology and the Philippine Medical Association.

The Bakuna, Now Na campaign, a piece of information, and education advocacy to increase vaccine acceptance, also kicks off with a Unity Statement with partner groups urging Filipinos to get vaccinated against CoVID-19.

The patient-led campaign also aims to support efforts towards vaccine equity through various initiatives and collaborations with governments, manufacturers, and the COVAX facility among other platforms.

“The pandemic has made Filipino patients more vulnerable to sickness and hardships. We urge all Filipinos, including patients and their families, to get vaccinated against CoVID-19 to protect ourselves and others from this potentially life-threatening illness. We also support initiatives to urgently address vaccine inequity and secure vaccine access for Filipinos, including those belonging to priority sectors like patients,” said PAPO President Ma. Fatima Lorenzo.

“The Bakuna, Now Na is a campaign for Filipino patients and by Filipino patients. We aspire that through this campaign, we would help in informing the patients and the public that vaccines are safe and effective having gone through regulatory approvals and scientific research. We are stronger and healthier together, which is why we are calling on everyone to get vaccinated,” said Karen Alparce-Villanueva, PAPO Treasurer and Campaign Project Lead.

A recent Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey found that only three out of 10 Filipinos are willing to be vaccinated even if they were free and approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Efforts are also underway to identify barriers for the non-vaccination of a number of senior citizens and persons with comorbidities, belonging to the A2 and A3 priority sectors.

Seeing the vast number of Filipinos who are hesitant to get vaccinated, PAPO recognizes the necessity to address the people’s concerns through the Bakuna, Now Na advocacy. The campaign will center on frequently asked questions about CoVID-19 vaccines and dispel myths with verified medical facts. The Bakuna, Now Na is an effort to translate complicated medical terms into easy-to-digest content that will help educate the public.

“The Department of Health is pleased to partner with the Philippine Alliance of Patient Organizations in our effort to increase vaccine confidence and vaccinate more people as soon as possible. We continue to call on patients and our senior citizens to get themselves vaccinated because vaccines are one of the proven ways by which we could prevent this pandemic. Vaccines along with the wearing of face masks, hand washing, and physical distancing will help us move forward safely from this pandemic. Vaccines are safe and effective kaya Bakuna, Now Na,” said Department of Health – Health Promotions Bureau Director Dr. Beverly Lorraine Ho.

Dr. Nina Gloriani, chairman of the Department of Science and Technology - Vaccine Expert Panel, is also present during the campaign launch as the advocacy will feature verified information coming from the country’s medical and vaccine experts.

The Bakuna, Now Na campaign is being led by PAPO in partnership with the Department of Health, the Department of Science and Technology, the Philippine Medical Association, the Philippine Pharmacists Association and former Health Secretaries Carmencita Reodica, MD, Esperanza Cabral, MD, Manuel Dayrit, MD, and Janette Garin, MD and 50 other organizations and growing.

According to Rey Sarmenta, the former Chairman of HAPLOS, the Hemophilia Foundation, he got vaccinated because he wanted to protect his family, and getting vaccinated is his chance to enjoy his life with his loved ones.

For Ara Lanorio, President of the Neurofibromatosis Friends Philippines, proper education about vaccines should take priority. She shared her initial concerns about the vaccine and how knowing the facts helped her decide to get vaccinated.

For more information about the campaign or to sign the PAPO Unity Statement, please visit www.papo.ph and PAPO’s FB page.

How to Attain Financial Freedom According to Ms. Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach

SUCCESS never came easy for a model, actress, and Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach, but her determination paid off as she became an inspiration for many when it comes to working hard, making the right choices, and choosing the right partners.

Pia’s career began when she joined the modeling and showbiz industry. Even as a child, she took work to heart because she wanted to help her mom, who was raising her and her siblings as a single mother.

“I was very young, maybe ten years old, when I got my first ‘job’ for a cosmetics line for teenagers. Shortly after, I landed my first cover for a teen magazine at 11 years old, which was amazing. Not everyone gets to have that opportunity,” Pia recalled.

“When I realized that I could potentially support my family by earning money from the kind of modeling jobs that I did, it just became a natural thing. I never turned down a role because I needed it. I needed the job so that I could support my family. As long as I was fit for it and it didn’t require me to do anything out of my comfort zone, then it was a ‘yes’ for me,” she added.

Saving money and her future

Pia’s early life in Cagayan de Oro taught her the value of saving and spending wisely.

“Even before I started earning money, my parents—especially my dad—taught me the value of money. He opened a bank account for me. He would make me write the withdrawal and deposit slips on my own. Manonood lang siya tapos titignan lang niya kung tama and then would ask me to make the transactions myself while he waits in the car,” Pia recalled.

“Activity namin ‘yon para matuto ako. At that time, I didn’t really think much of it, but now as an adult, I realize that these were the first steps that made me more aware of finances and expenses even if it’s just a small amount.” she said.

The lessons from her father made a lasting impact. Pia said that even today, 20 years after she opened her first payroll account with BDO, she never spends beyond her budget for herself and consistently sets aside enough funds for her future.

Being smart with credit

Believe it or not, Pia never had a BDO Credit Card until after she won Binibining Pilipinas. She realized that a credit card had become essential when she became Miss Universe and life became hectic. Her responsibilities required her to travel multiple times in a month, and she needed to conveniently and easily access her money. “When I’m traveling, my credit card is as essential to me as my passport. It is crucial in taking care of my expenses and almost everything else I need while I’m out there.” For Pia, as long as she keeps track of her expenses, and is mindful of her payments, her BDO Credit Card is a smart and useful financial tool.

Building wealth and protection

Now that she has seen financial rewards that came along with her success, Pia has started looking into ways to invest some of her savings. She didn’t know much about investments until she asked BDO for guidance and discovered a bit more than the basics.

“I learned that the best way to build wealth is to invest. It’s smart to put your money for future spending in a place that will fare well against inflation. Simply working hard and saving up won’t be enough,” she said.

“Having been a BDO client for 20 years, I trust BDO. I feel safer when I invest with their advice and assistance. For now, the BDO Unit Investment Trust Fund or BDO UITF is what works for me,” Pia added.

“Whenever I put away savings, I also put money in my UITF. BDO helps me invest the money and gives me regular updates. I am able to track the growth of my investments and it gives me a sense of financial freedom and control. I can rest easy knowing my hard earned money is also working hard for me as investments, while I am still active in my profession.”

She has also started thinking about life in the long term. “I’m a millennial and I’m not getting any younger. My mom is getting older. I’m also slowly acquiring more assets, like my new condominium, and I also used to travel a lot for work. All of these are what urged me to get life insurance, as well as property and travel insurance—these are intangibles that we need to protect our health, income and assets for peace of mind. This pandemic made me realize that we can never anticipate every kind of crisis—financial or otherwise—that can come our way. I’m glad BDO, through BDO Life and BDO Insure (an insurance broker) can assist me to get the right insurance to help protect me and my family, in case I can’t do it myself anymore.

Pia asserts that the financial security and convenience wouldn’t be possible without her bank. “BDO proved to be the right partner for helping me with all the right moves. I have savings for my future; I got BDO credit cards; I finally have investments; and I also planned out my insurance with them. I'm taking on a new path—I have new goals and new plans. And now, more than ever, I'm confident I can pursue my dreams and live life to the fullest. Because with BDO, I know, I made the right choice… and I’ll always choose BDO.”
