A Small Request, A Big Lesson and Kindness Beyond Expectations

After school, we stopped by Shopwise Cubao to run a quick errand. I needed to buy some ingredients for the meal I was preparing.

As soon as we walked in, I noticed many United States flags on display. My son Raian, our #AUesomeRaian stayed calm, but I could tell he was already drawn to them. He has always been fascinated by flags, and the US flag happens to be one of his favorites.

Once we had picked up what we needed, I asked one of the staff if we could take one. They explained they were not authorized to give them away. Seeing how focused Raian was, I asked if there was someone else we could speak to.

We could have easily bought it from the nearest bookstore, but I wanted to teach Raian an important lesson: always ask for permission first, and never just take what you want.

As we walked toward the cashier, Raian kept saying “Ma’am, Sir” to remind me we should go back and follow up. He heard me call the staff “Ma’am,” and he is used to hearing me address other people and employees that way. He waited patiently, and what happened next almost brought tears to my eyes. Walking toward us with a warm smile and holding the flag in her hand was none other than the Store Manager herself, Ma’am Joan.

I was truly moved. Even as a manager, she took the time to attend to such a simple request. It was kindness that went the extra mile. Truly excellent customer service. Not only did my son go home happy, but I also got to teach him good manners and respect.

Raian said his thank you, and then began singing The Star‑Spangled Banner. Ma’am Joan was delighted when he finished. He sang it beautifully, in a calm and clear voice. Nothing like the loud, playful singing he usually does at home. 🥰

Kindness does not need to be grand to be meaningful. A simple act of attention and respect can bring joy to a child’s heart and teach lessons that last a lifetime.”
