During a recent BDO Foundation and BSP town hall event, "Kita-Kita," Major Babiera shared a heartwarming anecdote. While shopping with her seven-year-old daughter, she asked if the child wanted to buy something.  The daughter's reply was remarkable: "Mom, is that a necessity or something unimportant? You don't need to buy for me if it's a luxury."

This insightful response showcased the effectiveness of Major Babiera's financial education efforts.  Attributing her knowledge to seminars and financial literacy modules, she emphasized the program's impact on her family's life.

Financial Discipline: A Way of Life

From duty to way of life. Navy Capt. Michael Barrion emphasizes that financial literacy is now a daily practice for soldiers.

Since 2019, the BDO Foundation, AFP, and BSP collaboration has provided extensive financial training to military personnel.  A Memorandum of Agreement solidified this commitment to enhance financial management skills, covering planning, saving, budgeting, investing, debt management, and scam avoidance.

This initiative has significantly shifted mindsets within the AFP. BDO Foundation President Mario Deriquito noted a surge in interest in investment products following training sessions.  While investments are gaining traction, debt management and scam prevention remain key focus areas.

The AFP has trained over 50,000 personnel, integrating financial literacy into its career training programs. Navy Captain Michael Barrion highlighted the positive impact on soldier focus and stress levels, stating that almost half of Filipino soldiers are now financially literate, with 76 trained instructors.  By incorporating financial education into each soldier's personal scorecard, the AFP ensures financial literacy becomes ingrained – a way of life, not just a requirement.

Recognizing the need for innovative approaches, the movement is designed for platforms where influence thrives—social media and livestream commerce.

#MineAngBotoKo avoids lectures and speaks the language of live selling to engage the 21.87 million Gen Z voters expected to turn out in the upcoming midterm elections. It leverages storytelling and community-driven content, aiming to build a civic movement that feels more like culture than instruction, and pushes purpose into uncomfortable but necessary territory, especially in least-expected spaces. With vote-buying turned brazen, the solutions must be just as bold. 

Comelec commissioner-in-charge Ernesto Ferdinand Maceda, Jr. said, “The video campaign perfectly captures the self-deprecating humor that resonates with our young voters. This is exactly the kind of hope the youth gives us—the hope that we are raising a generation of voters who understand the power of their voice and are willing to protect it. Let’s continue working together to ensure that these young voters inherit an electoral system worthy of their trust.”

The #MineAngBotoKo movement encourages young voters to take ownership of their democratic rights, as it sends a pointed signal to political candidates that the new generation of voters is more informed, discerning, and vocal about their commitment to an accountable and truly representative electoral process in the Philippines.

Comelec chairman George Erwin Garcia noted, “The strength of a nation’s democracy lies in the hands of its youth. When they say no to vote-buying and yes to integrity, they become the voice of real change.”

To amplify this movement, Comelec has forged a multi-sectoral partnership, initially bringing together FYT Media, a next-generation newsroom co-founded by veteran journalists Voltaire Tupaz and Atom Araullo; GCash, the country’s leading finance super app; and CDO Foodsphere, one of the Philippines’ largest food manufacturing companies. The campaign officially launches on May 9, 2025, and the Comelec expects more partners to join as election day nears.

Dominion Holdings Q1 2025 Earnings: ₱36.5 Million, Down from 2024

Dominion Holdings, Inc. (DHI), formerly known as BOO Leasing and Finance, Inc., reported a net income of ₱36.5 million for the first quarter of 2025.  This represents a significant decrease compared to the ₱75.9 million earned during the same period in 2024.  The primary reason for this decline is the substantial ₱3.2 billion cash dividend declared in May 2024.

This dividend payout had a considerable impact on DHI's financial position. Total assets decreased to ₱3.4 billion from ₱6.5 billion in Q1 2024.  Similarly, stockholder's equity fell to ₱3.4 billion from ₱6.4 billion year-over-year.  Total liabilities, however, remained relatively stable at ₱11.0 million.  The reduced funds available for investment following the dividend distribution directly contributed to the lower income reported for Q1 2025.  The company's financial statements reflect a strategic decision prioritizing shareholder returns, resulting in a temporary decrease in earnings.  Future performance will depend on the reinvestment of retained earnings and new investment opportunities.

As part of SM Supermalls’ ongoing commitment to accessibility and inclusion, SM malls have begun hosting audio-described film screenings specially designed for persons who are blind or visually impaired. These unique screenings include narrated descriptions of scenes, settings, and actions, allowing all moviegoers to share in the full experience.

Lamoiyan Brings Healthier Smiles and a Lice-free Summer to Communities

Debunking misconceptions and fighting the stigma vs lice and nits

Lamoiyan Corporation is kicking off the summer season with the continuation of its Kilusang Kontra Kuto (KKK) campaign and the Hapee Kiddie Caravan. 

This time, the company is teaming up with communities in Metro Manila, Bulacan, and Cavite to expand its mission to combat head lice (kuto) and provide essential health education and resources on its prevention and treatment. Building on the success of KKK in the previous years, Lamoiyan is also bringing in the Hapee Kiddie Caravan to equip barangay partners with access to information on proper oral health among kids.

Launched in 2016 by Lamoiyan’s Licealiz Head Lice Treatment Shampoo, Kilusang Kontra Kuto is now in its ninth year. The nationwide initiative remains dedicated to eradicating and preventing head lice infestation, also medically known as pediculosis, and the social stigma around it. 

Head lice outbreaks are prevalent during summer as lice prefer to live and breed in warm and damp environments, such as kids’ heads. Because the kids are on school break during summer, they are expected to be outdoors playing and doing summer activities like swimming. 

Dra. Claudine Joy Ramos, dermatologist and fellow of the Phililpine Dermatological Society, sheds light and howice spreads and the most effective ways to prevent and treat them, especially this summer.

One of the biggest hindrances to the elimination of head lice are the myths surrounding it. For instance, it is commonly believed that kuto is caused by bad hygiene and that only girls can be infested with head lice. Lamoiyan reiterated that even the cleanest hair can be infested through direct head-to-head contact with other kids and the sharing of personal items, like combs, hair brushes, hats, and towels.

Treatment is also done through unconventional and potentially harmful methods such as putting mayonnaise or kerosene on the infested person’s head. These are some of the common misconceptions in Philippine society that Licealiz is actively working to correct through education and awareness.
