Converge ICT Appoints Former NAVER Cloud CEO to Board, Accelerating Tech Transformation

In a decisive move to bolster its transformation into a full-fledged technology company, leading Philippine fiber broadband provider Converge ICT Solutions Inc. has elected Park Weongi, former CEO of NAVER Cloud, to its Board of Directors during its meeting on July 8, reinforcing the move of the company to go beyond connectivity and become a digital infrastructure and technology services powerhouse.

Park, a respected leader in cloud and digital infrastructure with over 30 years of global experience, brings deep technology expertise that will help steer Converge through its next phase of growth. His election to the Board supports the company’s ongoing shift from pure fiber broadband services to a broader suite of technology solutions, including enterprise cloud, AI-enabled services, and digital platforms.

“At this critical stage of our evolution into a technology company, we are building a leadership team that matches the scale and complexity of our ambitions,” said Converge CEO and Co-Founder Dennis Anthony Uy.

“Mr. Park’s track record in leading large-scale digital transformations and building future-ready infrastructure aligns perfectly with our vision to elevate the Philippines’ digital economy. His presence on our Board is not only strategic — it’s transformational.”

Park will serve the unexpired term of Atty. Francis Ed. Lim who was recently appointed as Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission. Park will join the Board Risk Oversight Committee and the Remuneration Committee.

A Proven Technology Leader

As CEO of NAVER Cloud from 2014 to 2022, Park led the company through a phase of rapid innovation and scale, expanding its cloud service portfolio from 22 to over 200 offerings across IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS. He also spearheaded NAVER’s sustainable data center strategy, earning the company a Platinum LEED certification.

From 2023 to 2025, Park served as CEO of NAVER Cloud APAC, where he drove regional expansion into 10 international markets and forged key partnerships across Southeast Asia, strengthening NAVER’s competitive position in the global digital infrastructure space.

His leadership roots run deep in enterprise IT, with earlier roles at IBM and TELUS Canada, where he led global IT services and telecom operations, respectively.

Strategic Synergy

Converge’s pivot to becoming a techco involves significant investment in digital platforms, data centers, cloud services, and AI-based solutions. Park’s experience scaling NAVER’s cloud business and navigating fast-evolving technology markets will directly inform Converge’s strategy in these areas.

“Converge is no longer just a connectivity company. We're building the digital backbone of the future — and we need board-level guidance from leaders who’ve already built those foundations at a global scale,” Uy added.

Park currently serves as Executive Advisor to NAVER Cloud, offering strategic guidance as the company continues to expand across Asia.

He holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Yonsei University in South Korea.

During its July 8 meeting, the Converge Board also appointed Arlene San Juan as Company Treasurer, taking on the role from Christine R. Blabagno who was announced as the Chief Risk Officer, concurrent with her duty as the Deputy Chief Finance Officer.

SM Malls' Coffee Fest: Your Guide to the Best Brews

For many of us, coffee is more than a pick-me-up — it's a pause button. A reason to slow down amid the rush, to savor a moment before the next meeting, or simply to sit in the company of one’s thoughts. This July, SM Supemalls invites you to see coffee not just as a drink but as a way to connect and create lasting memories with this year’s Coffee Fest.

While global chains often headline the coffee scene, a stroll through SM City Grand Central, SM Center Sangandaan, and SM City Valenzuela uncovers a constellation of coffee spots waiting to be rediscovered. From Vietnamese slow drips to oat milk matcha lattes, these are not just pit stops — they are coffee destinations in their own right.

COTTI COFFEE AT SM CENTER SANGANDAAN

Tucked inside SM Center Sangandaan is Cotti Coffee, a global favorite bringing a taste of the world to your daily cup. Sourcing Arabica beans from Ethiopia to El Salvador, Cotti offers a refined lineup of brews — silky Americanos, creamy oat lattes, and inventive matcha blends. Each cup is precise, smooth, and satisfying — ideal for shoppers, remote workers, or anyone in need of a mid-day caffeine ritual with an international twist.

FAMOUS BELGIAN WAFFLE AT SM CENTER SANGANDAAN

What began as a go-to for indulgent waffles has quietly evolved into a full café experience. Famous Belgian Waffle now serves thoughtfully brewed coffee made from locally sourced beans. The vibe is relaxed, the coffee confidently bold. Pair a robust brew with a freshly made waffle, and you’ve got yourself a cozy reward that feels both familiar and elevated.

ZUS COFFEE AT SM CITY VALENZUELA

At SM City Valenzuela, Zus Coffee is making specialty coffee feel effortlessly casual. No frills, no fuss — just really good coffee at friendly prices. From a standout Java Jelly Frappe to a smooth, no-nonsense Americano, Zus balances approachability with flair. It’s the kind of place where students, creatives, and casual catch-ups naturally gather — and keep coming back.

PICK UP COFFEE AT SM CITY GRAND CENTRAL

Affordable, accessible, and proudly local, Pickup Coffee proves that a great cup doesn’t need to cost a fortune. With prices ranging from just ₱50 to ₱100, and beans sourced from Mt. Apo and Brazil, this homegrown favorite offer both quality and creativity. Standouts include the classic Latte and the Kape Kastila — a Filipino-Spanish fusion that’s bold, aromatic, and surprisingly comforting. Whether you’re in a rush or on a break, it’s the kind of stop that lifts both mood and energy.

BÁNH MÌ KITCHEN AT SM CITY GRAND CENTRAL

For those who like their coffee strong and full-bodied, Bánh Mì Kitchen delivers a hit of Vietnamese authenticity. Brewed using the traditional phin filter method, each cup is a deep dive into bold flavor and slow-drip culture. Try the Black Cà Phê for a straightforward jolt or the Salted Cà Phê Foam for a richer, velvety twist. It’s not just a drink — it’s an experience in savoring.

DUNKIN’ AT SM CITY VALENZUELA

Some favorites never fade, and Dunkin’ is a prime example. Steeped in nostalgia, its comforting hot brew and chilled iced coffee remain reliable companions. Pair it with a donut or the classic bunwich for that foolproof duo you’ve loved for years. With branches at SM City Valenzuela and SM Center Sangandaan, this familiar friend is always nearby.

And because coffee is best enjoyed with community, SM’s Coffee Fest is adding more flavor to every visit.

Shoppers may join special events and make coffee moments unforgettable with art sessions, cup sleeve events, acoustic sets, and live DJ performances that will turn your usual coffee breaks into shared experiences worth remembering.

So, the next time you're at SM City Grand Central, SM Center Sangandaan, or SM City Valenzuela, take a coffee detour. Discover something new or revisit an old favorite with fresh taste buds. Because coffee isn’t just about caffeine — it’s about connection, comfort, and those small, quiet joys in between.

School season is back — and whether you are juggling class projects, binge-watching shows in between lectures, or making sure your notes are always on point, the Galaxy Tab S10 FE series is here to make campus life smarter, easier, and a lot more fun. From its massive screen to built-in AI features, these devices bring powerful tools right into students’ hands. Here are three reasons why the Galaxy Tab S10 FE and FE+ should be your ultimate school buddy:

A Bigger Screen That Does It All

A bigger screen means more room for ideas, creativity, and everything you need to get things done. The Galaxy Tab S10 FE+ boasts a huge 13.1-inch display with ultra-slim bezels while the Galaxy Tab S10 FE has a 10.9-inch screen, giving you more room to write, read, and create.

Whether you are attending online classes, editing group presentations, or simply catching up on your favorite series after exams, the immersive screen with smooth 90Hz refresh rate makes everything look sharp and vibrant. Plus, with up to 800 nits of brightness and Vision Booster, you can confidently study outdoors or in bright spaces without straining your eyes — perfect for students always on the go.

Lightweight Portability Meets Serious Performance

Lugging heavy gadgets around campus? No thanks. The Galaxy Tab S10 FE series is impressively slim at only 6.0mm and now even lighter than its predecessor, making it super easy to slip into your bag and take everywhere. Under the hood, these tablets are packed with the Exynos 1580 processor, with power to keep up with your busy student life. You can effortlessly switch between apps for research, editing documents, or video calls with your group mates, or even do them all at once with the Split-screen view or Pop-up view. And when it is time to relax, enjoy lag-free gaming or stream marathons without interruptions. Even your campus adventures are covered with a high-res 13MP camera for snapping crisp photos and recording memorable moments.

Smarter, Faster, and More Fun with Galaxy AI

Here’s where it gets even cooler: the Galaxy Tab S10 FE series comes loaded with Galaxy AI to help you study smarter, not harder. With Solve Math in Samsung Notes, you can instantly solve handwritten equations, making homework and problem sets quicker to tackle. Handwriting Help keeps your class notes clean and organized by automatically tidying up messy writing. And with Circle to Search with Google, simply circle anything on your screen to find more information on the spot — no app-switching needed.

Creativity also gets a major boost. With the S Pen that’s included with the tablet, it’s easier to take notes, sketch ideas, and fine-tune your projects on the go. The tablet also comes preloaded with powerful tools like GoodNotes, LumaFusion, and Clip Studio Paint so you can draw, edit, and design like a pro right from your device.

Bonus: Seamless Ecosystem and Security You Can Trust

Thanks to Samsung’s connected Galaxy ecosystem, your tablet syncs effortlessly with your Galaxy phone, Buds, or Watch — making file sharing, note syncing, and even managing your smart dorm room easier than ever. Converge Wins TM Forum's 2025 Moonshot Catalyst Award with Agentic AI Solution

Converge Chief Executive Adviser Eugene Yeo

Leading Philippine fiber broadband and technology solutions provider Converge ICT Solutions Inc., together with other company-collaborators, have once again triumphed in the Moonshot Catalyst Awards, an innovation-driven competition among technology companies hosted by the TM Forum, a global alliance of companies in the connectivity field.

Competing in the “ODA (Open Digital Architecture) in a Box” challenge, Converge with team members Telus, AWS, Vodafone. Verizon, RADCOM, and others, emerged as champions with the proposal of an ‘Agentic AI” or a Concierge AI Agent, a proactive, intelligent assistant that continuously monitors the customer journey and engages before problems arise.

The objective of the collaboration is to create a solution to the passive and reactive approach of telecom support that is prevalent in the industry. Whether it’s a billing error, service disruption, or plan query, the customer must initiate contact—typically navigating complex IVRs, chatbots, or long wait times. Issues are ticketed and routed through siloed departments.

This resulted in slow complaints resolutions, frustrated customers, high operational costs, and limited scalability. Every new product or service often requires staff retraining, custom integrations, and lengthy setup cycles—driving up both cost and time to market.

“We were looking for a solution that boosts proactive customer issue detection and resolution. When our platform components communicate with each other —not just with the customer— it shifts the approach from being reactive to predictive. This means customers get faster resolutions, more engagement, and experiences that feel uniquely tailored to them. This study was done with the support of some great collaborators who helped make this happen,” noted Eugene Yeo, Converge Chief Executive Adviser.

Converge provided insights into the Philippine telecom market where customer service experience is particularly complex, and contributed to the development of AI-driven customer experience solutions.

Demonstrating the value of the solution in a particular use case, the team members stated that without the ODA framework, deploying AI agents is a cumbersome process that may involve inconsistent data and legacy systems, and will take a total of 6 months to deploy a single AI agent.

Presently, Converge is in the process of integrating more AI-enabled tools in its operations, particularly in customer service. In the past year, it has enlisted the help of Salesforce to enable automation in customer management.

With the solutions, Converge is empowered to receive alerts on sentiments and conversations being said about it online, enhancing its ability to respond effectively to potential incidents.

Converge was also part of the winning team in last year’s Moonshot Catalyst Awards, exhibiting the company’s enduring commitment to digital innovation, and constant participation in venues pushing the envelope in AI-driven telecom solutions.

Raffy S. Algarra Jr., EastWest Head of Financial Markets and Wealth Management, go up on stage to receive the Best Discretionary & Advisory Services Offering Award at the Global Private Banking Innovation Awards 2025.

East West Banking Corporation proudly announces that its Trust and Asset Management Group (TAMG) has received the prestigious Best Discretionary & Advisory Service Offering award at the 2025 Global Private Banking Innovation Awards, marking another significant milestone in the Bank’s growing legacy of excellence in wealth and investment management.

Despite operating with a lean team of just 33 officers, EastWest TAMG manages an impressive asset base having achieved  significant year-on-year growth in 2024. Over the past five years, TAMG has averaged  better than market AUM growth, reflecting both disciplined investment strategies and consistent fund performance. This global recognition reinforces TAMG’s vision of delivering strategic, client-centric investment solutions that drive meaningful outcomes for both institutional and retail clients.

“This award is a reflection of the trust our clients place in us, and the discipline and innovation our team brings to every portfolio,” said Raul Victor De Guzman, Head of Trust and Asset Management Group at EastWest. “We are proud to deliver institutional-grade investment solutions that remain accessible, cost-effective, and tailored for the Filipino investor.”

EastWest Head of Financial Markets and Wealth Management, Raffy S. Algarra Jr., shared his view on the recent recognition: “At EastWest, we believe that financial empowerment should be accessible to every Filipino. This award affirms that our approach, grounded in trust, deep expertise, and genuine accessibility, is resonating with clients. The success of our Trust and Asset Management Group speaks to the kind of value we strive to create, always in step with our customers and their goals.”

Driving Superior Investment Performance

Among its most notable accomplishments in 2024, four unit-linked insurance funds managed by TAMG for bancassurance partner EastWest Ageas outperformed their respective peer groups:

  • The Equity VUL Fund, which tracks the Philippine Stock Exchange Index, posted a remarkably low tracking error of 0.0079%, the best in its category.
  • The High Dividend Equity VUL Fund delivered a 19.23% return, outperforming its closest competitor by 711 basis points.
  • The Peso Active Equity VUL Fund beat its peer by 155 basis points with a return of 7.43%.
  • The Dollar Income Payout Fund generated a 7.05% return net of payouts, 349 basis points higher than its closest peer.

Innovation and Accessibility in Investment

TAMG’s comprehensive suite includes Unit Investment Trust Funds (UITFs), investment management accounts, fiduciary services, and escrow arrangements tailored for a wide spectrum of client needs, from institutional investors to individual clients planning their financial future.

In 2025 and beyond, EastWest TAMG plans to launch new investment products, including actively managed and PERA UITFs, gold investment options, and deeper integration with Komo, EastWest’s digital banking platform. This will make investment opportunities even more accessible, especially for a younger, digitally enabled market.

In parallel, the group is expanding its portfolio sales team and automating operational workflows to increase both client service levels and investment research capacity.

Market-Leading Efficiency and Value

Setting itself apart in a competitive market, TAMG also offers one of the lowest trust fees in the Philippine market at just 0.9%, compared to the average 1.7% charged by competitors. This efficient model allows clients to maximize returns, further strengthening TAMG’s value proposition.

WATCH: Gerard Butler Has a Movie for Every Mood and Genre

Why settle for one genre when a Gerard Butler movie marathon gives you every emotion in the book?

Few actors command the screen quite like Gerard Butler. With his rugged charm and powerful performances, Butler has effortlessly slipped into roles that range from action hero to heart-wrenching romantic lead. Whatever mood you're in or genre you love, there's a Gerard Butler movie to match it.

Here are just a handful of his films that showcase Butler's incredible versatility.

Kandahar - Spy Thriller

What would you do if you were stranded in the most dangerous terrain in the world with your life on the line? That’s the dilemma CIA operative Tom Harris (Butler) faces in Kandahar. Set in Afghanistan, this spy thriller plunges viewers into a relentless game of cat-and-mouse.

After a covert mission is exposed, Harris must race against time to escape enemy territory, all while navigating deadly ambushes and betrayals. The stakes are personal and high, with Butler delivering an intense and gritty performance that keeps you white-knuckled from start to finish.

Nim's Island - Family Adventure

Butler takes up dual roles in Nim's Island. He’s both Jack Rusoe, a dedicated marine biologist raising his fearless daughter Nim (played by Abigail Breslin) on a secluded island, and Alex Rover, an adventurer from Nim's beloved book series written by a neurotic agoraphobe (Jodie Foster). The story follows young Nim as she fights to protect her island home from unwelcome visitors, drawing strength from her father, the unexpected arrival of Alex Rover, and her own bold spirit.

Greenland - Disaster Thriller

The end of the world isn’t coming quietly in Greenland; it’s crashing down with a vengeance. Imagine trying to protect your family as apocalyptic chaos tears through cities and people scramble for survival. Butler plays John Garrity, an ordinary man thrust into extraordinary circumstances as a comet hurtles toward Earth.

What sets Greenland apart from other disaster thrillers is its human focus. It’s less about explosions (though there are plenty) and more about the raw emotional struggle to save loved ones in a world falling apart. The quiet moments of panic and hope make this film a gut-punching ride, and Butler’s portrayal of a desperate but resilient father is unforgettable.

P.S. I Love You - Romantic Drama

When love endures even after goodbye, you get the deeply emotional P.S. I Love You. Butler stars as Gerry, a husband whose love transcends his passing. Through a series of letters, he helps his grieving wife, Holly (played by Hilary Swank), find her way back to life and rediscover joy. This romantic drama is rich in emotional nuance, gently exploring themes of grief, healing, and second chances. Butler’s portrayal of Gerry is endearing, making every flashback and posthumous letter hit harder.

Plane - High-Stakes Action Survival

If you’re craving raw, no-holds-barred action, Plane is your ticket to adrenaline-fueled entertainment. Butler stars as Brodie Torrance, a commercial airline pilot who finds himself thrust into a nightmare after an emergency landing leaves his passengers stranded in hostile territory. Rather than retreating to safety, Brodie steps into the role of unlikely hero, leading a thrilling fight against mercenaries to protect his people.

Converge Again Powers Pride: Connecting Love at Love Laban sa Diliman 2025

Converge employees as they took part in Pride Fest activities, in support of the LGBTQIA+ community.

For the fourth consecutive year, leading fiber broadband and technology provider Converge ICT Solutions Inc. proudly participated in Pride Month celebrations, standing shoulder to shoulder with the LGBTQIA+ community in the recent Love Laban sa Diliman Pride PH Festival 2025.

Taking place at the University of the Philippines - Diliman on June 28, the festival drew around 250,000 attendees from diverse backgrounds, including students, youth groups, government representatives, health advocates, businesses, and religious organizations, all united in support of equality and inclusion.

As the event's official connectivity partner again this year, Converge provided the event’s internet requirements, connecting the Pride Expo to the wider LGBTQIA+ community online, and enhancing online engagement.

“Supporting events like the Pride fest is part of our commitment to building a more inclusive and connected society,” said Converge VP and Head of Corporate Communications and Public Relations Jay-Anne Encarnado, who also participated in the march.

She noted that Converge as an organization advocates for diversity, equity, inclusivity, and belongingness (DEIB) in the workplace by putting policies in place to make sure that everyone feels seen, respected, and supported.

Despite the event falling on a Saturday, more than 30 employees from Converge also showed their support by taking part in the Pride parade, on behalf of the company, embodying the values of love, acceptance, and self-pride.

Converge mascot Conrad was also present during the celebration, adding more fun and excitement for the festival attendees.

In addition to their presence at the parade, Converge set up a booth where festival-goers could take memorable photos and enjoy fun games and giveaways.

Since 2022, Converge has actively participated in Pride Fest, continually endorsing initiatives that promote diversity and foster community bonding. And for the past two years, the company has served as the official connectivity partner of Pride PH for the said gathering.

"For me, this is a great initiative that gives us a chance to stand for equality and take part in something worthwhile. It was also a nice break from work and a memorable experience to share with my fellow employees,” said Converge IT Department Customer Technology Services IT UAM Senior Engineer Christine May Elebada, one of the Converge employees who volunteered to join the event.

Converge marched alongside various sectors during the festival to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community.

“Being part of this event was such a great experience. It felt good to step out from our usual work stuff and do something meaningful. Being there with my workmates who share the same support made the experience even better. I’d definitely be up for doing it again next year,” said Francis Miko Valiente from Converge IT Business Solutions Management.

Love Laban sa Diliman was organized by Pride PH, in collaboration with the Quezon City government and the University of the Philippines - Diliman.

Going Beyond Gender

To push the inclusivity agenda beyond talks of gender and embrace a more encompassing view of acceptance, Converge held a webinar on Diversity and Inclusion last June 23.

Drawing online participation of 160 employees, the webinar focused on two insightful talks: one from a strong gender and social advocate and another, from the company’s internal champion for sustainability and inclusion.

Shebana Alqaseer, a gender expert serving as a consultant to many international and local organizations, pushed the advocacy of wider social inclusion and broadening the definition of diversity beyond the lens of just gender-oriented differences.

“Diversity is a better known concept because in the West, it’s talked about as a matter of race. But to us, diversity should include not just gender or race, but other factors such as religion and socioeconomic status. Studies show that the more diverse our workforce, the more diverse ideas come to the fore. The variety of ideas and perspectives result in a richer and more nuanced approach to policy and work environment,” noted Alqaseer.

Bianca Muzones, Sustainability Analyst at Converge, meanwhile elaborated on the company’s evolving Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion strategy, stressing the importance of getting baseline feedback from the employees.

Michael Harris Conlin Wins 2025 Philippine Barista Championship, Paving the Way for Philippine Coffee on the World Stage

Michael Harris Conlin, a long-time advocate for Philippine coffee and social entrepreneurship, has been named the 2025 Philippine National Barista Champion, following his standout performance at the Philippine Barista Competition held recently at MAFBEX. His victory not only marks a personal milestone, but also reaffirms his mission: to build a beautiful coffee future by elevating Philippine coffee —  through connection, unity, and bold innovation.

With this win, Conlin will represent the Philippines at the World Barista Championship, to be held at HostMilano in Milan, Italy from October 17 to 21, 2025.

This will be Conlin’s second time competing on the world stage. In 2019, he made history as the first Filipino barista to reach the semi-finals of the World Barista Championship in Boston, USA, placing 15th in the world — a groundbreaking achievement that broke the glass wall and opened the path for more Filipino baristas to follow.

This year, his goal is even higher: to reach the global top 6 — and to bring home the World Barista Championship title to the Philippines for the first time.

Known for his deep commitment to uplifting Filipino coffee farmers and creating sustainable, community-driven impact through his ventures, Conlin’s championship routine centered on the theme of “connection.” It was a compelling message woven through coffee, community, and co-creation — demonstrating that truly exceptional coffee is not a solo achievement, but a collective triumph across the value chain.

“This win isn’t just mine,” Conlin shared. “It belongs to the farmers, the roasters, the scientists, the baristas, and the dreamers who all worked together to create something extraordinary. Coffee is about co-creation — and that’s what we’re celebrating.”

At the heart of his presentation was a championship blend of Philippine Liberica (Barako) from Laguna and Colombian Mokka, developed through months of experimentation and collaboration with world-renowned Colombian producer Wilton Benitez. This bold fusion symbolized the potential of cross-cultural partnerships to transform local coffee into world-class experiences — while proudly showcasing Liberica’s unique qualities to a global audience.

Beyond the competition stage, Conlin is the founder of Henry & Sons, The Giving Café, and the Institute for  Coffee Excellence, through which he has built long-term relationships with coffee farming communities across the Philippines. From advocating for fair trade and post-harvest innovation to investing in farmer education and product development, his work champions a common goal: to create a beautiful coffee future — one rooted in dignity, collaboration, and global recognition for Philippine coffee. “We’ve always believed in the beauty and potential of Barako,” he said. “This isn’t just about flavor; it’s about identity, resilience, and pride. When we unite as an industry — farmers, processors, scientists, and baristas — we don’t just compete. We resonate.”

As he prepares to return to the world stage, Conlin’s message is clear: this is more than a competition — it’s a movement. A movement to connect, to uplift, and to bring the spotlight to the richness of Philippine coffee. With passion, unity, and purpose, his dream is within reach — to bring the WBC Championship title home to the Philippines.

Michael’s competition coffees, including the Philippine Liberica  Colombian Mokka coffees, are now available for coffee lovers to experience at The Giving Café, and online through Henry & Sons’ official stores on Shopee, Lazada, and TheVault.ph.

Allianz PNB Life Supports Zero Hunger Through Sustained, Strengthened Food Rescue Partnership

Allianz PNB Life Chief Marketing Officer Gino Riola delivers the keynote message during the opening session of the Zero Summit, emphasizing the importance of making sustainability a core business strategy.

Food insecurity remains a pressing issue in the Philippines, with 27.2% of Filipinos experiencing involuntary hunger according to a Social Weather Stations survey conducted on March 15 to 25, 2025.

This contrasts with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) 2024 Food Waste Index Report of 2.95 million tonnes a year, or 26 kilograms (kg) per capita of food waste in the Philippines.  The Food Waste Index measures the amount of food and its inedible parts wasted in retail, food service, and households. The household sector worldwide accounted for 60% or 631 million tonnes of wasted food, followed by food service at 28% or 290 million tonnes, and retail at 12% or 131 million tonnes. This posts not only a challenge to overflowing landfills; the food waste materials also emit greenhouse gases that impact the environment.

Sustainable solutions to this inequity were discussed in the recent Zero Summit led by Scholars of Sustenance (SOS) Philippines, a food rescue and environment foundation that rescues good quality surplus food and makes these available to vulnerable communities.

Sustainability as a strategy

With its unwavering commitment to sustainability and social impact, Allianz PNB Life (AZPNBL) continues its partnership with SOS Food Rescue Philippines. Gino Riola, AZPNBL Chief Marketing Officer, delivered the keynote message during the Zero Summit opening session.

AZPNBL is committed to operating as a responsible business, taking into account the impact of its activities on people and the environment. In his talk, “Sustainability as a Strategy,” Riola focused on the importance of making sustainability the core of every enterprise.

He encouraged other business leaders to start with Purpose. “Sustainability strategies must be grounded in the company's core purpose and values,” he explained.

He added that it is also important to link the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework to the business goals. This echoes the ESG triple bottom line principle: People, Planet, Profit. “Sustainability must be integrated into the business model, he added. “It should not be mere optics. Hindi pwedeng puro palabas lang, dapat may balik din o clear connection to the organizations mission for it to be sustainable. Sayang ang effort kung hindi rin lang maipapagpatuloy.”

Allianz PNB Life Chief Marketing Officer Gino Riola joins fellow panelists at the Zero Summit to discuss sustainable solutions to food insecurity and food waste in the Philippines.

Innovation and compassion

SOS Philippines Food Rescue Country General Manager Rachel Marie Q. Luna underscored the importance of partnerships in helping the advocacy reach more Filipinos in need. “It is in these partnerships that our mission is able to reach farther, respond faster and serve more communities.”

Luna proudly shared that through its partners and its food rescue ambassadors, it has already reached its year-to-date goal, with more than 2.5 million meals served.  “At Scholars of Sustenance Philippines, we believe no one should go hungry while good food is being discarded. That is why we recover surplus and deliver it to those who need it most-creating a food system that is not only charitable but circular by design. One that transforms excess into access, waste into worth, and scarcity into shared abundance.”

“We are here today because of partners who help bring this vision to life-not just through generosity, but through action. Partners who give us the courage to move forward with quiet but steady confidence in tomorrow, and who show us that building harmony is more than an aspiration-it is something we can come home to.”

Since the launch of its partnership with SOS Philippines in 2023, AZPNBL has conducted food drives and volunteer activities among its employees, along with the donation of a truck that is used for food rescue missions. “We stand alongside those who believe that a better world is ours to make; that real, lasting impact grows from intention, care, and collaboration. And we are moved by those whose spirit to go further reminds us that progress happens when we push beyond limits and choose purpose, again and again,” Luna said.

The global focus of Allianz is on climate action. Riola said that this is reflected locally through Carbon footprint reduction initiatives in operations, its continued partnership with SOS Food Rescue Philippines, and the upcoming relocation to a certified green building in Makati. Riola adds, “Allianz is committed to sustainability—not just in protecting the future of its clients, but in ensuring the planet is ready for tomorrow.”
