Muay Thai for the Future: Home Credit's Sports Clinic Empowers Taguig Youth

Leading consumer finance company empowers 175 underprivileged children as part of its Alagang Home Corporate Citizenship program

Home Credit Philippines (HCPH), the country’s leading consumer finance company, has recently conducted a Muay Thai Summer Sports Clinic for children at South Signal Village in Taguig City, as part of its Alagang Home corporate citizenship program. This initiative, organized in collaboration with the Scientific Integrated Group of Martial Artists (SIGMA), demonstrates Home Credit’s commitment to community development, especially for the future of the next generation of athletes.

The event empowered 175 underprivileged children in Taguig City and was spearheaded by HCPH Chief Executive Officer David Minol; HCPH Chief Risk Officer Ihor Kruchynenko, and HCPH Head for Collections' Training, Quality, Complaints, Customer Experience (TQCCE) and ESG, Portia La-ab, alongside SIGMA's Kru Yai John Derick Ignes and Coach Alex De Jesus.

“Home Credit has always provided Filipinos with access to opportunities, and sports is no exception. With this event, we aimed to instill discipline, respect, sportsmanship, and essential skills in youth from a young age. As they grow older, these values will form a strong foundation for the paths they choose para sa life,” said Portia La-ab, HCPH Head of TQCCE and ESG.

Alagang Home is HCPH’s corporate social responsibility initiative, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Through this platform, Home Credit is dedicated to giving back to communities by implementing a range of social good programs and initiatives that contribute to building a better future and empowering Filipinos para sa life.

The Summer Sports Clinic, which began last June 2024 in Taguig City, focused on Muay Thai, a martial art from Thailand that utilizes fists, elbows, knees, and shins to overpower opponents. Beyond physical fitness, Muay Thai teaches children discipline, respect, perseverance, sportsmanship, and many more, which are valuable skills they can use throughout their lives. Additionally, this provides a positive outlet for the youth to steer them clear of negative influences.

The program culminated with championship games and a graduation ceremony, which was attended by HCPH’s executives and Taguig local government representatives. The event showcased the children’s newly acquired Muay Thai skills on demo pads and sparring decks, facilitated by SIGMA instructors. The children were awarded certificates in recognition of their participation.

“With our collaboration with Home Credit, we have inspired more young individuals to pursue a disciplined program like Muay Thai. In my years as an instructor, I have witnessed how Muay Thai has shaped the character of young people and even opened doors to career opportunities. We are deeply grateful to Home Credit Philippines for helping us inspire more children to explore and embrace the art of Muay Thai,” remarked SIGMA's Kru Yai John Derick Ignes.

SIGMA is the sole representative of the Muay Thai and Muay Boran Sports Association in the Philippines. Founded in 1990, SIGMA is an esteemed institution committed to promoting martial arts across the country, including Muay Thai, Karate, Aikido and Arnis.

“Championing sports fosters discipline and paves the way for success and a brighter future for our youth. At Home Credit, we are committed to supporting the sports communities in Taguig City and will continue to do so moving forward.

This sports clinic was a great experience for all of us, and we are thankful to the local government of Taguig for hosting it. This Muay Thai activity is just one of the initiatives that we’ll implement to contribute to the development of our community, especially to the young generation,” Ihor Kruchynenko, HCPH Chief Risk Officer concluded.

Alden Richards: BDO is My Ideal Banking Partner

New face of BDO. BDO Unibank introduces actor and long-time client Alden Richards as its newest brand ambassador.

Alden Richards has been a BDO Unibank client for almost a decade. This year, he became the bank’s newest brand ambassador.

“It feels great to be a part of the BDO family and to speak on their behalf. I have been using their services for a long time, so I can speak from my experience,” he said.

Alden prefers visiting BDO branches for his transactions because he appreciates the help from the branch personnel. With BDO's nationwide network, he can always find a nearby branch and ATM.

“I have seen how BDO has changed the banking industry in the Philippines. I've seen how it has improved products and services to meet our needs and goals, making our experience more efficient and rewarding,” he said, mentioning the bank's digital innovations, such as the Service Assist Machine (SAM) available at all BDO branches.

BDO Warns of Phishing Scams Targeting New Online App Transition

Beware of scammers taking advantage of the migration to the new BDO Online app.

BDO Unibank is cautioning the public against fraudsters who are taking advantage of the bank's transition to the new BDO Online app, by sending phishing links through emails or text messages to steal money from their online bank accounts.

Scammers are sending fraudulent email messages with a clickable "start" button that leads to a fake BDO website. This ploy gathers usernames and passwords to steal money from victims' online bank accounts.

The bank emphasized that the new BDO Online app, which is set to replace the old BDO Digital Banking app, can only be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play Store.

Fraudsters likewise often take advantage of other related legitimate scenarios in banks like system maintenance to lure victims into clicking on links “to update” their accounts which will then lead to spoofed websites.

To avoid falling victim to these scams, BDO advises customers to only download the new BDO Online app from the App Store or Google Play Store, and avoid clicking on suspicious links.

It’s time to switch to the new BDO Online app by August 19. This new app lets users manage their bank accounts and credit cards, view monthly statements and account summaries. It also features enhanced security options, such as the ability to lock or unlock cards, set spending limits, and control overseas transactions.

Converge ICT Solutions Reports Strong First Half of 2024: Net Income Up 24% YoY

L-R Robert A. Yu, Converge Chief Finance Officer; Grace Y. Uy, Converge President and Co-Founder; Dennis Anthony H. Uy, Converge CEO and Co-Founder; Benjamin B. Azada, Converge Chief Commercial Officer and Chief Sustainability Officer; and Jesus C. Romero, Converge Chief Operations Officer.

With net additional residential subscribers leaping by 142% yoy

Leading fiber broadband provider Converge ICT Solutions Inc. registered remarkable growth in the first half of the year, with net income surging 23.6% year-on-year to P5.3 billion and consolidated revenues growing 12.4% to P19.5 billion on the back of strong uptake of its residential broadband and sustained double-digit growth in its enterprise business.

Net additional residential subscribers of Converge more than doubled to 223,751 during the six-month period, a whopping 142% jump from 92,302 during the same period last year. This resulted in an 11.8% yoy growth in residential revenues to P16.6 billion in the first half of the year.

On the other hand, enterprise revenues increased by 16.0% yoy to reach P2.9 billion during the six-month period, following the rollout of products targeting the micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) sector and the expansion of regional enterprise sales.

“Our industry-leading performance in the first half of the year is a promising sign that 2024 will be another banner year for us. We see the demand for fiber broadband to remain unhampered, allowing us to continue reaching more and more Filipinos across different income levels with our flagship FiberX, low-cost postpaid BIDA Fiber, and prepaid Surf2Sawa offerings,” said Converge President and Co-Founder Maria Grace Uy.

As of end-June 2024, the consolidated subscriber base of Converge reached 2.35 million, a growth of 19.4% from 1.97 million as of the same month last year.

In a recent announcement, Sky Cable Corp. has entered into a commercial arrangement with Converge that will enable Sky to upgrade its subscribers to the pure fiber network of Converge and improve customer services. Converge has started implementing the network upgrade, allowing Sky subscribers to experience better.

“With our recent commercial arrangement with Sky Cable Corp., we see these numbers as just the starting point. We expect the collaboration to bear fruit in terms of revenue growth, as we are bound to see increased port utilization and further monetize our network,” noted Converge CEO and Co-Founder Dennis Anthony Uy.

Converge remains to be the Fastest Internet Service Provider in the Philippines in 2024, as Ookla’s latest, independent survey among ISPs in the Philippines show a speed score of 147.77 - the best in the industry. This is the second year running that Converge has bested its competitors in speed and digital experience.

Last month, Converge also joined hands with Nasdaq-listed firm Ribbon Communications Inc. to expand its fiber network capacity from its existing 800 Gigabits per second (Gbps) to 1.2 Terabit per second (Tbps) per channel.

Solidifying its reputation as a first-mover in innovative technology, Converge also inked a cooperation agreement with global tech leader Super Micro Computer Inc., the US-based total IT solutions provider for artificial intelligence (AI), Cloud, Storage, and 5G/Edge, to pioneer AI-powered, green data centers in the Philippines.

“While we keep a firm handle on our fiber broadband products, we are by no means limiting our technology solutions to these. With the guidance of the Founders, we will continue to expand our business to encompass Filipinos’ digital needs,” said Converge Chief Operations Officer Jesus Romero.

Converge Connects Beauty Clinic to the World, Boosting Medical Tourism in Central Luzon

Lady de Leon (middle) has leveraged on the pure fiber network of Converge to power her beauty clinic and connect her to a broader foreign clientele online.

The beauty and wellness industry welcomes a new SME player in the form of ‘Art of Beauty by Lady’ in Tarlac, which harnesses the power of pure fiber broadband to power its social media presence and client relations, aiming to strengthen its presence with both local and international clientele.

The newly-opened small business in San Sebastian, Tarlac is just in its eighth month of operations yet it already accommodates overseas bookings for international clients.
Lady de Leon has invested heavily in equipment mostly sourced from the United States, to ensure the best quality services in her clinic.
“Noong nagstart kami syempre hindi pa kilala ang Art of Beauty, konti pa lang clients at that time.  But in a span of two months, makikita mo na nag-grow yung business, kasi rumarami yung clients na dumadating sa amin even those coming from Pangasinan and La Union and also even from overseas clients.  They booked with us online because they found out andito na kami sa Tarlac, and they’re from New York and Australia. We were able to do this because of our internet connection,” said Lady De Leon, CEO and Owner of Art of Beauty by Lady.

Medical tourism has long been a draw in most Southeast Asian countries, with the Philippines also making a bid to make health, wellness, and beauty services as a marketable product to foreign tourists. The English-speaking prowess of medical and beauty professionals in the country is a strong advantage, according to the government.

The internet has been a catalyst in enabling this medical tourism sector as more and more local businesses like ‘Art of Beauty by Lady’ reach OFWs and foreign clientele through online platforms.
The beauty clinic has an extensive menu of beauty services, including non-invasive and non-surgical procedures.

The beauty clinic offers a variety of services including semi-permanent make up, body slimming and contouring, skin whitening, and skin care treatments. All the products used in their services are imported from the US, guaranteeing only the best quality ingredients in their treatments.

Aiding them in their day to day operations such as in securing appointments, promoting products and services, and supporting client communication is the fiber powered connection of Converge.

“When you’re running a small business, you need a fast and reliable internet connection especially ngayon na nasa digital age tayo where you can do your advertisement and promotion through social media,” said Lady.

Such is the trust of Ms. De Leon in the seamless connection that she chose the same provider for her adjacent business in the area, a sports bar named ‘Titos and Titas Sports Hub’. Giving credence to the uninterrupted quality of connection of Converge is the fact that six TVs  in the bar stream games simultaneously for customers - with no lag or downtime.

“We offer live streaming of games - basketball games or baseball games and you really need a fast connection kasi anim na tv yon na playing all at once. We already use Converge at home so we made the decision to use it in our business as well because we’re satisfied with the service,” the entrepreneur explained.

With a Converge connection driving their two businesses, Lady De Leon is confident of regional expansion, especially for Art of Beauty by Lady.
“In the next five years, I am thinking that Art of Beauty by Lady would have more branches here in Luzon. We will do training and seminars about beauty and aesthetics,” noted Lady.
