The Converge Corporate Communications and Public Relations team staunchly supports the STET Women in Cebu Media in its celebration of Cebu Press Freedom Week.

Organized by STET, an organization of active and retired women journalists in Cebu, the forum focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Community Journalism, held on September 20, 2024.

During the event, Converge Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications and Public Relations Jay-Anne Encarnado delivered a message on behalf of the company which has stood with STET in its women empowerment advocacy for the second year.

Also sharing some words regarding the forum's point of discussion, Encarnado highlighted the adoption of AI in the company's operations and reminded the attendees of some considerations, especially for its use in newsrooms.

The talk on AI was then led by Harvard University 2024 Nieman Fellow and former GMA News Online editor-in-chief Jaemark Tordecilla. 

“AI, as a tool, can help in content creation, but it can make us really lazy and before we know it, when we are trying to beat the deadline, we forget to abide by the rules for journalists. Let’s not surrender our brains, our critical thinking, our energy and stamina, our professional ethics,” Dr. Lelani Echaves-Paredes of STET highlighted in her closing remarks. 

Several members of the Cebu press, as well as aspiring student journalists from different universities and colleges in Cebu, were present during the forum.

Cervical Cancer: The Philippines Says "No More!"

Did you know that cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers?

The Philippine Foundation for Vaccination (PFV) recently hosted a media forum titled "Isang Boses Laban Sa Cervical Cancer," in Novotel Manila, bringing together key medical societies, organizations, and government agencies to discuss the urgent need to eliminate cervical cancer in the Philippines. The forum highlighted a united front among various sectors, all committed to accelerating efforts toward this goal.

The event brought together key medical societies and organizations, including the Philippine Medical Association (PMA), Pediatric Infectious Disease Society of the Philippines (PIDSP), Philippine Infectious Disease Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (PIDSOG), Philippine Society for Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (PSMID), among others; Johns Hopkins Program for International Education in Gynecology and Obstetrics (JHPIEGO); government agencies such as the Department of Health (DOH), and Department of Education (DepEd); and Quezon City District 1 Councilor Charm Ferrer, in a collective commitment to advancing HPV vaccination, screening, and treatment to eliminate cervical cancer by 2064.

Burden of cervical cancer and strategies for elimination Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the primary cause of cervical cancer, which claims the lives of 12 Filipinas every day. Nearly all cases of cervical cancer are linked to HPV, yet this disease is largely preventable through vaccination. The HPV vaccine significantly reduces the risk of infection, offering a critical opportunity to save thousands of lives by preventing cervical cancer and related diseases. 

In response to this public health challenge, the World Health Organization (WHO) launched the Global Strategy to Accelerate the Elimination of Cervical Cancer in 2020, setting ambitious targets for 2030: 90% of girls fully vaccinated with the HPV vaccine by age 15, 70% of women screened by ages 35 and 45, and 90% of women with cervical disease receiving appropriate treatment.

Australia and Indonesia are leading the charge in cervical cancer elimination through their ramped-up HPV vaccination programs. Australia, which launched the world's first publicly funded national HPV vaccination program in 2007, has coupled it with a comprehensive National Cervical Screening Program that has been in place since 1991. By vaccinating both girls and boys aged 12-23 and introducing a twice- in-a-lifetime screening, Australia is on track to eliminate cervical cancer by 2038.

Indonesia has recently committed to a National Cervical Cancer Elimination Plan (2023-2030) that aligns with WHO's 90-70-90 targets, adapting them to local needs and resources. This plan emphasizes a multisectoral approach, involving stakeholders from academia, industry, healthcare, religious groups, and the media to drive success.

In contrast to Australia and Indonesia's robust efforts, the Philippines faces significant challenges in cervical cancer prevention, with only 33% HPV vaccine coverage for girls and a screening rate of less than 1% for women. This disparity underscores the need for stronger initiatives in the Philippines to improve both HPV vaccination rates and access to cervical cancer screening. If the country fully implements these elimination pillars, cervical cancer could be eliminated by 2064, potentially preventing 970,000 deaths.

Integrating 9-Valent HPV vaccine into the national immunization program

A key focus of the forum is on the need to upgrade to the 9-valent HPV vaccine, which offers broader protection against emerging high-risk HPV genotypes, including HPV types 31, 45, 52, and 58. These types have become more prevalent in the Philippines. The 9-valent vaccine, already available in private healthcare settings since 2017, is a crucial component in the country's cervical cancer prevention strategy. It is also pre-qualified by the WHO, ensuring its safety and effectiveness.

Studies from countries like Japan show that the 9-valent vaccine achieves earlier and more significant reductions in cervical cancer incidence compared to earlier vaccines. Thailand has also recently upgraded its national immunization program to include the 9-valent vaccine.

Medical societies will be presenting their unified stance on integrating the 9-valent HPV vaccine into the National Immunization Program to ensure comprehensive protection for Filipino girls.

Expanding access to HPV vaccination

With the country facing challenges in scaling up HPV vaccine coverage, the forum will highlight the urgent need to expand access points for vaccination. By increasing HPV vaccination availability in private schools and clinics, the Philippines can work towards achieving the WHO's 90% vaccine coverage rate and bridge existing gaps in immunization.

Urgent call to eliminate cervical cancer

Cervical cancer and other HPV-related diseases are causing unnecessary loss of life, despite the availability of vaccines and effective screening. This fight can be won, but it requires swift and decisive action.

There is an urgent need to close the awareness gap and ensure that every Filipino-particularly young adolescents-has access to life-saving HPV vaccines. The tools are available, but a collective effort is required to reach those most in need.

Government agencies, healthcare professionals, and community leaders are being called upon to join this critical fight. Together, they can combat misinformation, increase vaccination rates, and work toward the eradication of cervical cancer in the Philippines.

The moment to act is now, as lives hang in the balance. By uniting, stakeholders can prevent unnecessary suffering, save thousands of lives, and pave the way for a healthier future for the nation.

Ready to be crowned SM’s Super Spelling Bee Champion?


SM Supermalls is hosting the largest spelling bee in the Philippines, aiming to boost literacy and support young Filipinos by revitalizing their love for spelling. Free registration is open today until October 11, 2024 to kids aged 9 to 11 in Grades 4 to 6.  Preliminary rounds take place on September 27, October 4, and October 11 at 40 SM Supermalls nationwide.

Brgy S2S: Walang-Sawang Saya, Laro, Papremyo at Mas Pinabilis na Prepaid Fiber Internet Hatid sa Cebu


Pagkatapos ng matagumpay na launch ng BRGY S2S sa Tandang Sora, Quezon City noong nakaraang buwan, susugod naman sa probinsya ng Cebu ang Surf2Sawa at Converge para maghatid ng walang-sawang saya, palaro at papremyo sa mga Cebuano. Kaakibat nito ang paglunsad ng mas pinabilis na prepaid fiber internet sa naturang probinsya.

Ayon sa reports ang kabuuan ng Central Visayas ang naging fastest-growing economy sa buong bansa sa nakalipas na taon—simbolo ng patuloy na pag-unlad ng rehiyon. Kaya naman ikinagagalak ng Surf2Sawa na dumayo sa Cebu para pasayahin ang mga tao at ipakita ang kahalagahan ng pagtutulungan sa bawat komunidad.

Ang Surf2Sawa o S2S ay ang prepaid fiber internet plan na mura, unlimited, at walang kontrata. Ito ay nagbibigay ng pagkakataon sa bawat tahanang Pilipino na maging konektado sa internet na may bilis na ngayon ay umaabot hanggang 50 Mbps (mula sa 25 Mbps) at nagkakahalaga lamang ng P4.00 kada araw bawat user (hanggang 6 na devices ang pwede kumonekta). At dahil prepaid ang Surf2Sawa, makakapili ang customers ng top-up options na angkop sa kanilang pangangailangan: mula P50 load para sa 1-day service hanggang P700 para sa 30-day unlimited connectivity.

Ang Surf2Sawa ay hindi lang basta prepaid internet service, ito ay isang initiative ng Converge para makamit ng lahat ang mas maginhawang buhay. Sa pamamagitan ng pagbibigay sa bawat tahanan ng mura, unlimited, at walang kontrata na internet, mas gagaan para sa maraming mamamayan ang pag-aaral o paghahanapbuhay dahil meron na silang maaasahan na prepaid fiber plan.

Naniniwala si Converge Head of Consumer Marketing Ms. Sandra Zira Tubale-Dingal na ang internet ay hindi na lamang isang luxury kundi isang basic need ng bawat Pilipino tulad ng tirahan, tubig, kuryente, at pagkain. “Misyon ng Surf2Sawa at BRGY S2S ang magdala ng pinaka-sulit sa budget at walang-sawa na high-speed internet sa bawat barangay sa Pilipinas, para lahat ay maging konektado sa digital world, lalo na para sa trabaho at school,” dagdag pa nito.

Ayon din kay Mr. Dhing Pascual, Vice President and Business Unit Head sa Converge ICT, ang main objective ng Brgy S2S ay makatulong sa mga kababayang walang access sa internet at namamahalan sa karaniwang offer ng internet plans. Dagdag pa nya, “What’s important is for us to provide these services sa mga kababayan nating nangangailangan ng internet. Sa pamamagitan ng Surf2Sawa, maa-address natin iyon lahat. Nais namin na malaman ng lahat na ang S2S ang abot-kaya na internet ng bayan na laging ready ‘pag kailangan.”

Maliban sa unlimited internet, walang-sawa din ang saya, laro, at papremyo na dadalhin ng BRGY S2S kasama si Melai Cantiveros, Cheche Tolentino, Joy Cancio, at SB New Gen. Converge Empowers Marginalized Communities with Prepaid Broadband and Income Opportunities

Converge hosted a sales agent training for stay-at-home moms in Tondo, Manila, introducing its prepaid fiber broadband brand Surf2Sawa.

Empowering communities beyond connecting high-speed fiber broadband internet, Converge ICT Solutions Inc. continues to open income opportunities for under-resourced families as it conducted a sales agent training session in Tondo, Manila featuring its prepaid fiber broadband solution Surf2Sawa (S2S).

With the support of its S2S partner JK2L2 Inc., Converge trained housewives and moms from Baseco Compound on the know-how of operating as home-based sales agents.

The participants were also shown how to effectively use social media to boost their earning capabilities, as well as some practical tips to protect themselves against online scams, such as phishing.

Recently, Converge joined hands with Caritas Manila to formally launch its Unang Yakap community at Baseco.

The project intends to support underprivileged pregnant and lactating moms with sustainable healthcare and nutritional assistance for the next six months.

HUAWEI Tops Q2 2024 Wearable Tech Sector with Record Growth Says Latest IDC Data

HUAWEI has secured the top spot in the global wearable tech market for the second quarter of 2024, according to the latest data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Wearable Device Tracker. 

The global wrist-worn device market shipped 43.7 million units in the second quarter of the year, seeing a slight year-over-year (YoY) decrease of 0.7%. HUAWEI defied this trend by posting significant gains.

HUAWEI’s outstanding performance in the wearable space is highlighted by its substantial shipments and market share, posting 8.9 million units in shipments and 20.3% market share in Q2 of 2024, compared to 6.3 million units shipments and 14.2% market share in Q2 of 2023. The global tech brand has recorded a 42.1% YoY growth rate, besting its competitors.

The launch of HUAWEI’s line of wearable devices boosted its performance in the first half of 2023, with 55.1% YoY increase in shipments. This led to the tech brand leading the global wrist-worn market for two consecutive quarters. HUAWEI has achieved significant growth in regions such as the Middle East and Africa, Latin America, and Central and Eastern Europe.
