MSMEs advised to take small steps towards AI adoption

Speaking before the North Luzon Area Business Conference of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) held in Bataan province, Uy championed technology adoption, especially in the face of widespread use of new technologies such as generative AI.

As intimidating and complex artificial intelligence (AI) tools may be, micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) should take gradual but steady steps towards exploring how these could make operations more efficient and scalable, according to Converge ICT Solutions Inc. CEO and 51st Philippine Business Conference and Expo (PBC&E) Chairman Dennis Anthony Uy.

Speaking before the North Luzon Area Business Conference of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) held in Bataan province, Uy championed technology adoption, especially in the face of widespread use of new technologies such as generative AI.

“Companies all over the world are trying to adapt to AI. Here in the Philippines, we’re barely scratching the surface. And the smaller businesses, which are just starting to embrace digitalization, have to learn new ways of doing business with the growing pervasiveness of these new technologies,” said Uy.

“AI is not just for medium to large companies. Micro and small businesses can also find a foothold in the use of the game-changing technology,” he added. “With AI adoption, MSMEs can potentially increase efficiency, reduce costs, and drive competitive edge.”

Coming from a trip to Taiwan which is known as the global hub for the semiconductor industry, Uy noted that artificial intelligence is making its way through the manufacturing value chains of most technology sectors.

Converge ICT Solutions Inc. CEO and 51st Philippine Business Conference and Expo (PBC&E) Chairman Dennis Anthony Uy (third from left) delivered the keynote address during the opening ceremony of the North Luzon Area Business Conference of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) held in Bataan.
IN PHOTO (from left): PCCI-Bataan President Bryan Joseph Banzon, PCCI Chairman Emeritus and ECOP and Philexport President Sergio Ortiz Luis Jr., Converge CEO Uy, Bataan Governor Hon. Jose Enrique “Joet” Garcia, PCCI Vice President for Regional Affairs and Membership Bing Sibal-Limjoco, PCCI Director for Environment and Climate Change and Education and Corporate Governance Edgardo Lacson, PCCI-North Luzon Area Vice President Atty. Maria Amalia Tiglao-Cayanan, and PCCI-Region III Regional Governor Cristina Tuzon.

“If the Philippines can find a niche spot in this value chain, the multiplier to employment, skills and knowledge upgrading, and the effect on downstream industries is massive,” he said. “While micro and small businesses may not yet be able to participate in these larger value chains, where they can benefit from is by taking small steps in adapting AI tools,” noted Uy.

From the part of the local government, Bataan Governor Jose Enrique “Joet” Garcia III pledged his support to make his province “future-ready” by hosting start-ups and supporting digitally-enabled businesses.

“We want to express the support of the provincial government of Bataan, of course together with all the local government units for the creative and innovative industry. We know this sector is the key to accelerate more productivity and growth, especially for the youth who were born adept to digital devices,” noted Garcia.

The possibilities of AI use were experienced first-hand by micro and small businesses in the Byte Forward Hackathon jointly organized by Converge, PCCI, the Department of Trade and Industry, and Converge subsidiary Rev21 Labs.

Converge and the participating small businesses came up with problem statements stemming from actual pain points experienced in the course of business. Ten teams of third and fourth year college students from Bataan came up with solutions aided by AI tools.

Artificial intelligence will come into bigger focus in the 51st Philippine Business Conference and Expo organized by the PCCI. As Chairman of the Conference, Uy deliberately made the move to make the event ‘technology-forward’ and bring modern, digital solutions to MSMEs. The Conference will be held on October 20-12 at the SMX Convention Center.

Capacitating Educators for the Revised K–10 Curriculum: The 2025 COCOPEA–REX Regional Run

School leaders, stakeholders, and educators nationwide take part in the 2025 COCOPEA-REX Regional Run—deepening their understanding and strengthening their readiness for the effective implementation of the Revised K–10 Curriculum, particularly for Grades 2, 3, 5, and 8.

From classrooms to communities, across institutions and islands—the COCOPEA–REX regional run gathers stakeholders and educators anew to lead, learn, and shape a better future for the Filipino learners.

As a new school year begins, educators are presented with an important opportunity to improve their teaching practices, serve their students more effectively, and ultimately, contribute to elevating the quality of education in our country. This year, with the Revised K–10 Curriculum taking root in our classrooms, that opportunity has never felt more urgent and meaningful.

This is the spirit behind the 2025 COCOPEA–REX regional run.

Organized by the Coordinating Council of Private Educational Associations (COCOPEA), the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP), and Rex Education, in partnership with the Department of Education, this initiative aims to equip educators with the tools and knowledge needed to effectively implement the Revised K–10 Curriculum, particularly for Grades 2, 3, 5, and 8.

A Transformative 2-Day Learning Journey Across the Archipelago

This year’s regional run, themed “Capacitating the Private Education Sector for the Effective Implementation of the Revised K–10 Curriculum,” aims to ensure that every Filipino learner has access to quality, relevant, and responsive education. The run began in Davao City on February 27–28, hosted by the University of the Immaculate Conception, Bajada Campus, welcoming educators from Regions 11, 12, SOCCSKSARGEN, and parts of BARMM. From there, the initiative traveled across the country through five more major legs: Baguio City – St. Louis University for Regions I, II, CAR, and parts of Region III,  Cebu City – Cebu Institute of Technology for Regions VII, VIII, and parts of Region IX, Iloilo City – Angelicum College for Region VI,  Cagayan de Oro – Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan for Region X, parts of BARMM and Region IX and  Muntinlupa City – San Beda College Alabang for Regions NCR, IV-A, and IV-B

School leaders, stakeholders, and educators nationwide take part in the 2025 COCOPEA-REX Regional Run—deepening their understanding and strengthening their readiness for the effective implementation of the Revised K–10 Curriculum, particularly for Grades 2, 3, 5, and 8.

Over the 2-day program, participants were provided with the tools and platform to unpack the revised curriculum—not just in theory, but in practical, tangible ways. The first day opened with a plenary session that set the tone for the training—bringing together educators, administrators, and stakeholders to align on the goals and significance of the Revised K–10 Curriculum.

Following this, the second plenary session titled “General Updates on the Revised K–10 Curriculum” provided participants with an overview of the recent changes and developments, focusing on curriculum content and structural updates for the priority grade levels.

From there, participants moved into concurrent breakout sessions, grouped per learning area, for a curriculum walkthrough, where they engaged in two core activities:

●       An In-depth Exploration of Learning Standards for Grades 2, 3, 5, and 8, clarifying what students are expected to know and do at each grade level

●       Curriculum Unpacking of Learning Competencies for Grades 2, 3, 5, and 8, which involved breaking down each competency into practical, actionable teaching objectives

As the run transitioned into the second day, the focus shifted from understanding the curriculum to implementing it effectively in the classroom. It began with the third plenary session, titled “Evidence-Based Intervention: Focus on Pedagogical Practices and the Importance of Assessment,” highlighting how research-based teaching methods and meaningful assessments can drive better student learning outcomes.

This was followed by morning breakout sessions, again organized per learning area, that explored the Pedagogical Practices that Integrate and Develop Literacy and 21st-Century Skills through theoretical discussions and strategy-sharing. Educators shared strategies and discussed how to incorporate these essential skills into their teaching methods.

In the afternoon, educators participated in a series of hands-on workshops, still within their respective learning areas. These included:

●       A workshop on pedagogical practices to further strengthen instruction that fosters literacy and 21st-century competencies

●       A theoretical discussion and a workshop on effective assessment and feedback strategies, guiding educators in using assessment not only for grading but also for supporting student growth and reflective teaching.

School leaders, stakeholders, and educators nationwide take part in the 2025 COCOPEA-REX Regional Run—deepening their understanding and strengthening their readiness for the effective implementation of the Revised K–10 Curriculum, particularly for Grades 2, 3, 5, and 8.

Anchored in Purpose, Rooted in Legacy

This year’s run is especially meaningful as it coincides with REX’s 75th anniversary—a milestone that honors decades of commitment to supporting Filipino learners, educators, and institutions.

For 75 years, REX has stood not only as a learning solutions provider, but as a katuwang sa buhay—a partner for life, in learning, growth, and transformation. The regional run serves as a continuation of this legacy, reaching out to private schools, listening to their needs, and assisting them in navigating the evolving educational landscape through collaboration and shared learning.

Moving Forward, Together

With COCOPEA, CEAP, REX, DepEd, and countless Edukampyons at the forefront, this movement proves that progress is possible when we lead with collaboration, compassion, and courage. Even in the face of shifting systems and emerging challenges, we can always rise—grounded in legacy, driven by purpose—Para sa bata.

I pray that this partnership continues to be successful.

Hindi sila mahihirapan to connect with the audience, kasi SexBomb and Melai has always been masa. And that’s what makes it so special. Nakakarelate tayo, and at the same time, we’re helping spread the word about Surf2Sawa na kahit saan ka pa sa Pilipinas, deserve mong magkaroon ng mabilis at abot-kayang internet na walang hassle.”

Converge champions Filipino tech talent, powers Byte Forward Hackathon in Bataan

Last June 19-20, Converge launched its first Byte Forward Hackathon during the North Luzon leg of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (PCCI) regional business conference. It is a 24-hour innovation marathon that challenged student developers to create practical solutions for real-world business problems.

As the country’s leading fiber broadband and technology provider, Converge ICT Solutions Inc. recognizes that supporting Filipino talent and nurturing aspiring innovators are essential to driving growth in the local tech industry.

Converge CEO and Co-Founder Dennis Anthony Uy has long championed this cause as he maintains a personal commitment to cultivating homegrown talent.

This year, the company is making an even stronger push to this by actively engaging with academic institutions to empower students pursuing careers in technology. Last June 19-20, Converge launched its first Byte Forward Hackathon in Balanga, Bataan during the North Luzon leg of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (PCCI) regional business conference.

It is a 24-hour innovation marathon that challenged student developers to create practical solutions for real-world business problems.

In collaboration with the PCCI and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Converge hosted the hackathon as part of a broader initiative to bridge enterprises with next-gen thinkers, who are tech-savvy and possess the natural edge in creating bold, out-of-the-box solutions.

Five participating universities from North Luzon sent two teams each to compete in a high-stakes environment that tested their creativity, and technical skills.

Converge CEO and Co-Founder Dennis Anthony Uy has long committed to championing Filipino tech talent. Converge has been bringing skilled developers and engineers into its workforce while investing heavily in employee training and development.

“When I was young, I shared the same passion for technology, for innovation, and now, increasingly, for AI. It's inspiring to see young talents rise to the challenge. That’s why we're investing in infrastructure and building technology hubs, especially in Pampanga, to ensure these bright minds have access to opportunities and can thrive,” Uy shared in his message.

“To all the young visionaries, believe in your passion, stay proud of your purpose, and know that you have a place in building our nation’s future,” he added.

‎Converge subsidiary Rev21 Labs Inc. played a key role in facilitating the competition, from scouting teams, providing mentorship, and equipping the participants with its custom-built Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool.

‎Converge subsidiary Rev21 Labs Inc. played a key role in facilitating the competition, from scouting teams, providing mentorship, and equipping the participants with its custom-built Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool.

The 10 groups were presented with themes grounded in real operational hurdles of businesses, identified through prior consultations with actual owners. This enabled participants to address issues that directly impact companies and develop solutions with tangible business value.

“We're doing this because we aim for two things. First, the students will be presented with real-world problems outlined by businesses in the North Luzon area. We'll see if they can come up with a solution in 24 hours. We're not expecting perfection but at least a minimum viable product. We want to see how they think, how they create, and how fast they can build something. Second, we're looking for high-caliber talent. And by virtue of being here, they already are,” said Rev21 Labs Inc. CEO Ron Puno.

Over the 24-hour competition, teams raced against the clock to turn their ideas into working prototypes. Their mentors from Rev21 offered technical guidance and strategic advice, while the AI tool gave participants a competitive edge in accelerating their development process.

By the end of the presentations and judging on Day 2, three standout teams were declared winners for their innovative ideas, and potential for real business impact.

GG Well Code from EXACT College of Asia was crowned as the champion for their Smart Marketing and Business Finder Tool.

GG Well Code from EXACT College of Asia was crowned as the champion for their Smart Marketing and Business Finder Tool. BPSU1 from Bataan Peninsula State University secured second place with their Smart Talent Sourcing solution, while third place was awarded to LetranKnights1 from Colegio de San Juan de Letran - Bataan for their innovative Citizen Reporting for Quality Assurance solution.

The winning teams were awarded cash prizes worth P50,000; P30,000; and P20,000, respectively.

“What we saw was innovation, which is one of the things that we have been emphasizing throughout this hackathon. We wanted to see something new, and these teams were able to showcase that from the ideation, to the solution, to the technical,” said Rev21 Enterprise Portfolio Manager Adrian Tiu.

“To students who are interested in joining our future hackathons, this was a very good experience to put your knowledge, the things that you learned from your classes, to practical use. These problem statements were based on real actual problems so this will definitely be a practical learning experience,” Tiu noted.

The Byte Forward Hackathon takes place concurrently with PCCI’s regional business conferences. Future dates include the Visayas on July 24-25, National Capital Region on August 7-8, Mindanao on August 27-29, and South Luzon on September 25-26.

The champions from the Regional Hackathons will compete against each other in a final tournament during PCCI’s 51st Philippine Business Conference and Expo, scheduled for October 20-21 at the SMX Convention Center in Manila, offering prizes up to P500,000.

Century Tuna welcomes back Mt. Everest summiteer Jeno Panganiban

Century Tuna officially celebrates the return of mountaineer and Superbod athlete Jeno Panganiban to the Philippines after successfully reaching the top of Mount Everest, the world’s highest summit.

Through a couple of months of relentlessly climbing the unforgiving terrain and enduring the frigid climate of Mount Everest, Jeno has etched his name in Philippine history as the youngest male Filipino who has reached its summit in almost two decades, inspiring a new generation of Filipinos to embrace the challenge of facing their own summit with strength and proper nutrition.

Century Tuna honors his monumental achievement and welcomes Jeno home, shining a spotlight on his triumphant ascent. He embodies strength, endurance, and resilience in his pursuit to reach the summit of the world.

“When we were approaching the summit, I approached it with pride because by that time, we knew that the whole nation was watching us. And I felt emotional because I was able to carry the Philippine flag to the top of the world,” Jeno shared as he recounted the once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Jeno’s summit to the world’s peak is a testament to years of hard work and dedication to fueling his passion for mountaineering and optimizing his lifestyle. He transitioned from a former software engineer, working a 9-to-5 job, to owning a distribution business, supplying healthy produce to restaurants across Metro Manila, which has given him the flexibility to control his own time.

When he set his sights to finally achieving his long-time dream of conquering Mount Everest, Jeno knew that it required singular focus and relentless drive. It wasn’t only about rallying together all his previous mountaineering experiences. It was also about actively choosing to go through extreme preparation and intentionally nourishing his body with the right nutrition that can push him to become one of the Philippines’ national prides.

From high altitude sickness, hazardous weather, to the looming threat of avalanches, Jeno persisted through the life-threatening challenges. He endured temperatures reaching below freezing, extreme sun exposure burning, and loss of oxygen as he was reaching the summit while pushing through exhaustion.

“You have to be comfortable in being uncomfortable,” says Jeno. “So every day, we made sure that our bodies were in the right condition. I made sure my body and mind were ready for the push.”

With Century Tuna as his partner, Jeno was able to bring his A game to his climb. His remarkable resilience to climb to an elevation of 8,849 meters is nourished by his favorite Century Tuna meal, the classic combination of Century Tuna Hot and Spicy with saltine crackers, a comfort food that’s easy to prepare but packed with protein to keep him energized throughout his arduous training and long ascent.

His journey perfectly embodies Century Tuna’s “Fit for Any Role” campaign, highlighting the brand’s celebration of the multi-faceted image of fitness and its part in helping individuals face any role.

“Century Tuna is proud and honored to support Jeno’s journey because he is a living testament that anyone can face their own summit. He has shown us that through properly nourishing the body and building up strength, everyone can go after their dreams — a pursuit that Century Tuna has always championed. He is an inspiration, not just to his fellow athletes, but to all of us who take on life’s challenges every day,” said Century Pacific Food, Inc. Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Greg Banzon.

Century Tuna challenges every Filipino to define their own summit. Whether they want to achieve a fitness milestone, a personal goal, or a monumental accomplishment, being fit with Century Tuna means being ready to take on the challenge.

SM Malls in Sangandaan, Grand Central, and Valenzuela Sharpen Quake Preparedness

Members of SM Center Sangandaan’s Emergency Response Group (ERG) lead coordinated evacuation, rescue, medical, and communication operations during the nationwide earthquake drill.

SM malls in Sangandaan, Grand Central, and Valenzuela reinforced their commitment to disaster preparedness by joining the 2nd Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) held on Thursday morning. The drill was staged before regular mall hours to ensure the safety of tenants and employees while maintaining uninterrupted mall operations.

At exactly 9:00 a.m., a loud siren echoed through SM City Grand Central, SM Center Sangandaan, and SM City Valenzuela, signaling the start of the nationwide exercise. Tenants and employees immediately followed standard protocols, executing the “duck, cover, and hold” maneuver in response to the simulated 7.2 magnitude earthquake.

First responders at SM City Grand Central deliver immediate medical assistance to a mock casualty as part of the comprehensive earthquake simulation, aligned with the government's call for heightened preparedness nationwide.

The earthquake drill went beyond routine exercises, incorporating evacuation and rescue simulations designed to test the capabilities of each mall’s Emergency Response Group (ERG). These included first aid response and complex rescue scenarios to ensure swift, coordinated action in the event of a real disaster.

Each mall also conducted refresher training on earthquake preparedness for staff, tenants, and affiliates. Sessions covered worst-case scenarios, evacuation routes, and basic life-saving techniques, strengthening the culture of readiness across all departments.

With the increasing frequency of seismic events in the region, the earthquake drill forms part of SM’s broader commitment to safety and resilience in partnership with Local Government and National agencies.
