Happy To Serve, Even Through Storms

The synergy behind SM's disaster response

SM Supermalls Regional Operations Head for Bulacan and CAMANAVA, Ana Datu, an SM employee-volunteer, delivers immediate relief to a resident impacted by flooding.

In a country visited by an average of 20 typhoons a year and prone to earthquakes, communities across the Philippines often face the daunting task of having to rebuild lives overnight. During these moments, collaboration becomes a lifeline, especially for thousands of Filipinos whose lives have been upended by disasters.

For the SM Group, helping communities get back on their feet is more than just a responsibility: it is a shared commitment woven into its culture of service. At the heart of this mission is Operation Tulong Express (OPTE), SM Foundation’s disaster response initiative.

Carried out through close coordination among SM Foundation, SM Markets, and SM Supermalls, OPTE brings together dedicated volunteer teams united by a shared commitment to serve those in need. SM Markets employees assemble Kalinga Packs in warehouse hubs that double as packing centers, while SM trucks and vans transport the goods to affected areas. On the ground, employee-volunteers from across the foundation and SM Supermalls lead the relief distribution in the spirit of bayanihan, personally delivering essentials and—in harder-hit areas—supporting medical missions that offer free consultations, first aid, and medicines.

For Andrea Rodriguez, SM Supermalls Regional Operations Head for Pampanga, service is rooted in lived experiences, especially since her family was among those affected by the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991. Years later, she witnessed devastation firsthand during the 2019 earthquake that affected her province and the rest of Luzon.

“We were at the forefront during that time na tumutulong. In fact, as soon as tumigil ang pagyanig nung time na ‘yun, all hands on deck na kami,” she recalled.

Her first OPTE experience came earlier when, as a new SM employee, flooding hit communities near the San Fernando mall. “Hindi ko pa nun alam kung ano yung OPTE, pero ‘yung mga kasama ko sa mall, sabi nila, may opportunity para makatulong dun sa mga nabaha nearby. Sabi nila, ‘sama tayo,’” she shared.

One of her most vivid memories was when they provided support to an 80-year-old resident in a remote barangay in Angeles following widespread floods during the pandemic. “Nung inabutan namin, umiyak siya nang umiyak. Sabi niya, hindi siya makapunta dun sa barangay hall kasi binaha ang bahay niya... Sabi niya, parang akala niya, makakalimutan na siya. Pero ang saya-saya niya na pinuntahan namin siya, na may pag-asa,” Andrea shared.

According to Ana Datu, Regional Operations Head for Bulacan and CAMANAVA, the company’s strong culture of helping others has shaped the way employees live and work. Because of this, lending a hand has become second nature.

“We normally conduct OPTE in basketball courts so that mas marami ‘yung mapuntahan namin. But we also take time to go to the eskinitas — na kung minsan may naiiwan na mga bata at matatanda. Kapag nakita mo sila, parang may lungkot. ‘Nakalimutan kami, naiwan kami kasi nandun sila lahat sa basketball court,’” she shared. “But when they see us there with the Kalinga Packs at inabot mo ito sa kanila, they feel ‘Wow! Hindi kami nakalimutan. These are the people who remember us.’”

“When I joined SM, I learned that community service and social responsibility are a big thing here. It has been a culture. It has been a habit. And it's not difficult to imbibe this because you see it, and it transcends. It starts from the leaders, trickling down to the entire team. So, everybody's moving,” she added.

Regional Operations Head Ana Datu delivers essential relief to a flood-impacted resident, embodying the spirit of SM's volunteerism. She ensures even those in hard-to-reach areas feel: "Wow! Hindi kami nakalimutan."

Both Ana and Andrea highlighted how volunteering shaped their outlook on work and in life.

“If you see the environment and the environment forges you to help and to be empathetic to the plight of everyone surrounding the community, surrounding the mall, your community; then mai-imbibe mo siya,” Ana said.

A heartfelt embrace from a CAMANAVA resident receiving essential relief. By reaching deep into communities, SM volunteers ensure those affected feels remembered and supported, embodying the commitment of OPTE.

“It’s really great to be part of a team, a group that is able to support and help the community in good times and in bad times,” Andrea capped.

Operation Tulong Express (OPTE), a social good collaboration of SM Foundation, SM Supermalls and SM Markets, is the group’s disaster response initiative that provides immediate relief and essential goods to communities affected by calamities. In heavily impacted areas, it also deploys medical missions that offer basic healthcare and first aid.

Pro Tips from Experts to Manage Your Finances as a Freelancer

The freelance life comes with a lot of freedom – working your own hours, choosing your clients, setting your own pace. But behind that freedom are the financial responsibilities that many people don’t talk about. Suddenly, you’re not just a virtual assistant or social media manager. You’re also your own accountant, tax filer, insurance planner, and many more all at once.

Many freelancers quickly discover that financial literacy is a non-negotiable part of the freelancing life. As long-timers in the game, April Villacin, Lyle Tanciano, Lyn Cepillo, and Coach Abby Maravilla know that managing their finances is important to stay stable through the unpredictable world of freelance work. Here are their three tips for mastering the balancing act of growing their careers as professional freelancers and managing their finances.

1. Track your cash flow and set up a system

Knowing how much you will be earning and spending each month is especially important for freelancers who are typically paid per project or contract. Because freelance income is irregular, cash flow monitoring is a lifeline.

One of the simplest ways to add structure to your finances is by separating your money into different accounts: for taxes, savings, personal spending, and business-related expenses like software, monthly subscriptions, and new equipment. It’s also important to list down your expected expenses each month, such as for utilities, phone bills, water, and housing.

According to April Villacin, who has been a professional virtual assistant for 8 years, many freelancers overlook the importance of a good cash flow strategy. “In freelancing, you need good skills and good clients, but you also need a good cash flow system to make sure that you’re running your business sustainably,” she says.

Staying on top of your cash flow prepares you for slow months or the moments when a client unexpectedly pauses a project. It’s a safety net that helps you make decisions confidently. So, try out this simple habit: set aside at least one day a week to update your financial records to prevent surprises and reduce money-related stress.

2. Get your payments in order—fast, secure, and on time

A strong client base means very little if payments arrive late. This is something freelancing coach Abby Maravilla sees all too often among the freelancers she mentors each day.

For those working with international clients, there are several unavoidable delays with payments, but one area where it often occurs is when withdrawing to your local e-wallets or bank accounts.

“That’s why choosing the right payment method matters. You want something that charges minimal fees, processes payments quickly, and doesn’t leave you guessing when your money will arrive. Payment delays directly impact essentials like rent, utilities, groceries, and savings – so reliability is a must,” Abby explains.

“Bills don’t wait for days, so it’s important to have a platform that gives us access to our money as soon as possible,” adds Lyn Cepillo, who has been a social media manager since January 2021.

This is where GCash is most reliable. GCash now offers improved cash-in support for USD payments through its partnerships with Payoneer and PayPal, giving freelancers faster and easier ways to get paid. Freelancers paid via Payoneer can withdraw directly to GCash for free, with no minimum or maximum amount. Meanwhile, PayPal users now enjoy significantly lower fees, capped at only PHP 200 for 1% charges, with funds arriving in real time. This means more earnings stay with freelancers.

3. Use tools that simplify financial management

As freelancers’ workload grows, handling payments becomes more complex. This is why tools that remove friction are invaluable.

“There are many platforms out there, but for me, GCash is the clear choice, because it’s an all-in-one app,” says Lyle Tanciano.

Beyond payments, GCash helps freelancers with their financial routines, with instant cash-ins and seamless bill payments to savings features and many more. The less time you spend worrying about money, the more time you can spend doing well at work.

Whether you’re freelancing full-time or running a passion project on the side, managing your finances is about progress not perfection. It’s the small habits like tracking your cash flow, staying on top of payments, and using smart tools – like GCash – that help you build a system that works for you, even on the most unpredictable days. Download GCash today and get more out of every payday.

Converge Spreads Christmas Cheer with Desktop Donation to Pampanga Orphanage

Converge donated three desktop computers to CHELK, supporting their children to develop digital skills and enhance their learning opportunities.

Leading fiber broadband and technology provider Converge ICT Solutions Inc. has returned to the Pampanga-based orphanage Children’s Home of Eucharistic Love and Kindness (CHELK), donating three desktop computers to make the season brighter for the children under its care.

“Guided by malasakit and a commitment to using technology for good, Converge strives to make a meaningful impact in the communities we serve. This Christmas, we continue that mission by giving and sharing, spreading hope, and making a positive difference to contribute in nurturing and equipping the next generation,” said Converge VP and Head of Corporate Communications and Public Relations Jay-Anne Encarnado.

Converge employees with the kids of Children’s Home of Eucharistic Love and Kindness (CHELK).

Coinciding with the company’s holiday activity this year, the Pampanga-based employees from Converge hosted a gift-giving activity at the orphanage, in line with their Project Lingap, a personal volunteer effort they conduct annually to exhibit malasakit even outside the workplace.

Through the project, which is now running in its fourth year, employees facilitated a Christmas party, played games, and gave out gifts and prizes for the kids.

“This effort is a meaningful way for us to give back and show our care. This has been the fourth year we are doing this as we are happy to share time and create joyful moments with these children. For us, this is a wonderful way of ending the year through generosity and compassion,” said Converge First Vice President and Head of Network Technology Group Jeff Briones who led the said activity.

Through their Project Lingap, Pampanga-based employees of Converge have been supporting CHELK, spreading love and joy to the kids with gift-giving activities during the Christmas season.

Building on its previous engagement with CHELK in 2021, Converge returned to the foundation as a way of giving back to its hometown Pampanga. Converge first engaged with the orphanage in 2021 when it conducted a Christmas gift-giving and turned over donations to support its permanent shelter.

In February 2022, the company also donated learning tablets and provisioned internet connectivity to support the online learning of its kids, in celebration of Safer Internet Month.

Established more than 30 years ago, CHELK has been providing shelter, education, and care to orphaned, abandoned, and abused girls in Pampanga. Currently, the orphanage provides education and shelter to around 20 children.

Allianz Donates up to 200,000 Euros for Typhoon Uwan PH Aid, Relief Efforts

The 200,000 euros donation from Allianz SE will support the Red Cross' disaster and relief operations for areas affected by recent typhoon Uwan, and post-disaster support for the communities.

As part of its mission to provide humanitarian relief in areas impacted by disasters, Allianz SE recently announced a significant donation of up to 200,000 euros in response to the devastation caused by Super Typhoon Uwan (international name: Fung wong) in the Philippines.

The powerful storm unleashed torrential rains and destructive winds in 16 regions across  the Philippines in mid-November, impacting 2.1 million families. Some of these regions were already reeling from the effects of Typhoon Tino (International Name: Kalmegi) that caused landslides and flooding only a few days prior. The back-to-back storms have intensified the humanitarian crisis, leaving communities in urgent need of support.

Rescue, Relief, Rebuild

Allianz SE donated up to 100,000 euros to the German Red Cross to support the Philippine Red Cross’ urgent rescue and relief efforts for affected areas. In addition, aid of up to 100,000 euros will be allocated for post-disaster support, in collaboration with Allianz PNB Life and local partners. This funding will focus on disaster prevention and climate resilience, helping communities rebuild and enhance their preparedness for future events, underscoring Allianz's dedication to protecting more Filipino families.

Renate Wagner, Member of the Board of Management of Allianz SE, responsible for Asia Pacific, Mergers & Acquisitions, People and Cultures says, “At Allianz, we stand united with the people and communities of the Philippines, determined to help them recover following the recent typhoons. A heartfelt film for the changing Filipino family

This year’s “Buo ang Saya ng Pasko” campaign features a touching Christmas film made in partnership with Forsman and Bodenfors Singapore. The film captures how Filipino families continue to evolve, showing real moments across different walks of life. It follows hospital workers sharing a Christmas meal during their shift, security guards bonding over simple food, couples treating their pets like family, single parents enjoying time with their children, and large families reuniting across generations.

Jollibee said the film celebrates the idea that while traditions change, the spirit of love and connection that defines a Filipino Christmas remains strong.

Joyful Christmas Stores illuminate the nation

Now on its third year, Jollibee’s Joyful Christmas Stores have returned brighter and bigger. This 2025 season marks the largest rollout to date, with 300 decorated branches nationwide. Each store features festive lights and community inspired touches to bring happiness to neighborhoods, including areas affected by recent calamities.

Churchgoers received free Jollibee treats as part of the nationwide countdown.

The celebration continued in select schools like Pinaglabanan Elementary School in San Juan, Kapt. Jose Cardones Integrated School in Taguig, and St. Mary’s Elementary School in Marikina. Students received Jollibee Kids Values Books and treats for free, bringing early Christmas cheer to young learners.

Learning was made fun with activities and live demos that showed why personalized pet food and care matter. Those who bought ROYAL CANIN® products got free vet checks and basic grooming. There was also a rehoming area (run with trusted breeders) where cats and dogs found new homes – a big win for animal welfare.

Key Lessons and Good Habits

The event stressed the basics of responsible pet care: good food for health, regular checkups, safe homes, and helping pets socialize well. A sustainability booth encouraged guests to recycle clean, empty ROYAL CANIN® bags to pick up simple eco-friendly habits.

Beyond learning, the weekend helped pet owners, breeders, vets, and advocates get closer. People joined walks, games, trivia, creative workshops, and kids’ activities. A "passport challenge" and big raffles added excitement, with prizes like ROYAL CANIN® products and freebies.

Expert Tips You Can Use

A big highlight was expert advice from ROYAL CANIN®'s latest research. Specialists like Dr. Kitsie Torres (Scientific Communication Manager), Dr. Gio Tristan Esguerra (from Vets in Practice), and Miguel (from Ben’s Walking Club) talked about why pet food should fit a pet’s age, breed, size, lifestyle, and health needs – showing ROYAL CANIN®'s focus on science and personal care.

It Doesn’t End Here

ROYAL CANIN® keeps supporting pet owners even after events. Through the Royal Canin Club app, they get ongoing expert advice, learning resources, and rewards. The brand’s partnerships with groups like UP MV K9 and Hound Haven PH, plus its focus on sustainability, show it cares about every part of a pet’s well-being.

A Weekend That Made a Difference

Gerard Poa, ROYAL CANIN® Philippines’ Market Head, said: "Looking back at this year’s event, I’m inspired by how passionate everyone was. Together, we took real steps toward ‘A Better World for Pets’ – mixing science, care, and community to support responsible ownership. Why You Should Be Excited, Not Worried, in Your 30s

Getting in your 30s is often seen as the age when things start to slow down, when fun and spontaneity fade, and routine takes over. But what if it’s actually the start of something more exciting?

Your 30s bring a unique mix of freedom, adventure, and vitality. It’s a decade where you can do more with the right mindset and proper nourishment from healthy food and drink like Birch Tree Adult Boost, which helps you stay strong, sharp, and full of life. Birch Tree Adult Boost shares some of the reasons to be excited about your 30s and how you can make the most of them.

Opportunities to explore the world with strength and energy

Birch Tree Adult Boost brand ambassador Bea Alonzo embraces new adventures with strength and energy.

You’ve learned from your 20s and built the confidence to try new things. Whether it’s traveling, pursuing passions, or meeting new people, your 30s are your chance to live fully, and it’s easier when your body feels its best. Birch Tree Adult Boost, with its Vitamin C, Vitamin D, B-vitamins, Iron, and Zinc, supports the adult body to become strong enough to travel the world in their 30s. According to research released by the Philippine Social Science Journal, Filipino millennials show that they tend to travel more often and actively seek new experiences, reflecting a strong desire for exploration and personal growth.

Opportunities to build deeper, healthier relationships

You’ve realized that connection matters more than convenience. Investing in meaningful relationships means showing up as your best self, energized, balanced, and emotionally grounded. A study published in the Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal on the values of Filipino millennials, shows that while they still value fun and social interaction, they’re now placing greater importance on relationships rooted in authenticity and emotional depth.

Opportunities to give back to others

Your 30s often bring a deeper sense of purpose. Many find fulfillment in volunteering or supporting their communities, all of which require the energy and clarity that come from good health. From the same study in the Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal, Filipino millennials reveal that caring for others and contributing to the community rank among their most important values.

Opportunities to put yourself first

Bea prioritizes self-care and stays strong for what matters most
You’ve learned that self-care isn’t selfish; it’s essential. From sleeping well to eating right, you make intentional choices for your body and mind. With the right nutrition and habits, you can sustain your vitality for everything and everyone you love. Birch Tree Adult Boost, which contains support nutrients like Vitamin C and Iron, helps increase energy and immunity to ensure your body is strengthened for the long run. A recent study on Filipino millennials by Inquiro shows that many of them are now prioritizing wellness and self-care, proving that putting yourself first means staying strong enough to live and give your best.

Experts agree that your 30s are a critical window for laying the foundation of long-term wellness. According to Carmina D. Olivenza, MRDM, RND, this decade marks the early onset of measurable shifts in metabolism, immunity, and cognitive load. “This is the stage when wellness must become proactive rather than reactive,” explains Olivenza.

“Current Philippine nutrition studies consistently show that many adults are not meeting recommended intakes for Vitamins C and D, Iron, and key B-vitamins – nutrients that directly support immune defense and energy metabolism. We also see the importance of nutrients like Zinc and B vitamins in sustaining cognitive performance, which becomes essential as daily demands increase in your 30s.” Olivenza emphasizes that protecting your health during this life stage starts with addressing these gaps consistently. “Ensuring adequate intake of these nutrients every day helps maintain strong immunity, steady energy, and sharp mental focus – all of which are vital for thriving in your 30s,” she adds.

To support this, fortified milk drinks like Birch Tree Adult Boost, formulated with Vitamin C, Vitamin D, essential B-vitamins, Iron, and Zinc, provide a convenient and reliable way to meet daily nutritional needs and stay at your best.

Bea Alonzo thrives in her 30s with strength and confidence, fueled by Birch Tree Adult Boost

Your 30s aren’t a countdown or a scary moment in time. They’re a decade to live for yourself, full of confidence and vitality. For Birch Tree Adult Boost Ambassador Bea Alonzo, award-winning actress and wellness advocate, being in her 30s is a time for balance and becoming. “You’re wiser, stronger, and more confident in your own skin. I started to really focus on what truly makes me happy: my health, my growth, and the people I love. It’s liberating to realize that age doesn’t define you; how you take care of yourself does,” she shares.

With small, consistent habits like staying active, eating well, and nourishing your body with Birch Tree Adult Boost, you can live life with vitality and balance. Turning in your 30s isn’t the end of something, it’s the beginning of everything.

Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken Sparks Up SM City Valenzuela

Valenzuela’s dining map just got hotter and smokier. Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken and Sauce Bar has officially opened at SM City Valenzuela, bringing its signature charcoal-grilled chicken to a new wave of mall-goers, food explorers, and sauce obsessives.

At the heart of the brand is a simple promise delivered with confidence. Chicken is marinated for 24 hours in piri piri, then grilled over open flames that makes meat stays juicy. The result is a smoky depth layered with African chilies and spices that keeps regulars loyal and first-timers curious. It is honest, hands-on food that rewards the first bite and calls you back for another visit.

Leading the festive lineup is the Holiday Glazed Chicken, a limited time offering that adds a rich, caramelized sweetness to the brand’s signature char. It is made for sharing, gifting, and easy celebrations. It’s honest, hands-on food with an unmistakable smoky edge, the kind that rewards both first bites and repeat visits.

If Peri-Peri has a cult following, the sauce bar is the reason. Eight signature sauces arrive with every dish, each with a playful name and a global stamp. There is Ka Tuka’s Honey Pinakurat with its Filipino vinegar kick, Hen Dynasty’s Hoisin Sesame, and the smoky Apachee’kn Mesquito BBQ. Tokyo Tori’s Sweet Soy adds balance, while Harissa Exotica and Count Cluckula’s Garlic Brew bring heat and depth. Cajun Remoulade offers creamy contrast, and Fowl-Mouthed Chili Peppa’ dares the brave. Mixing, matching, and posting are part of the fun.

While chicken is the star, the menu stretches confidently into comfort-food territory: Expect BBQ back ribs, Plaza Porco, fajitas, truffle-laced Pasta Tartufo, pizzas, milkshakes, and desserts, with after-dinner options that pair easily with cocktails. It is a menu built for mall hopping, long catch-ups, and late nights that start with food and end with stories.

Peri-Peri’s Valenzuela opening signals the growing appetite for bold, well executed comfort food. The Holiday Glazed Chicken is available nationwide for a limited time. Consider this your cue to gather, dip, and dig in. Visit Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken and Sauce Bar at the Second Level of SM City Valenzuela.
